Parts of a Plant – Lesson Plan

Overview
Students will watch a powerpoint presentation on parts of a plant, and be tested on their
knowledge.
Key Understandings:
1.) Basic parts of a plant
2.) What each parts role is
3.) What a plant needs for survival

Objective(s) and Standards

Idaho Standard: LS1.A: Structure and Function
 All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways
to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find,
and take in food, water and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves,
flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow. (LS1-1-1)

Students will be able to identify and describe the basic parts of a plant, and what plants need in
order to survive.

Anticipatory Set
Hand out worksheets upside down on each students’ desk. Begin with the Powerpoint
presentation. During the PowerPoint, before revealing answers, ask the students if they know
what the basic parts of a plant are. On the leaf slide ask the students if they can recognize the
type of leaf pictured. After going over the parts of a plant, ask the students if they know what a
plant needs for survival, then reveal the answer. On the last slide, reveal fun, cool facts about
plants. After the slideshow, tell the students to turn over their worksheets and fill in the answers,
then color their own plant with all of the parts they learned about. After the students are done
with their worksheets, go over on the overhead projector.
