Poles Nets Fish Farming

What is Sustainable Seafood?
Seafood that is either caught or
raised in farms while being
mindful of the lasting effects it
has on the environment

→ US is a global leader in
___sustainable seafood
What is biodiversity?
The variety of life within an
ecosystem/environment

EX: There are over 11,000 species

living in the Pacific ocean.

→ mammals (whales, dolphins)

→ coral/plants (seaweed)

→ fish (shrimp, sharks, tuna)

impact...
If we overfish a specific species (tuna)…

1. The tuna will not have enough time to

reproduce and will die off
2. The shark that feeds on the tuna will
not have enough food and will start
to die off
3. The population of plankton that the
tuna feeds on will grow larger, crowd
reefs, and kill off other plankton
species (competition)
Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch
- A handy iPhone app that
provides consumers with info on
what current seafood is
relatively abundant (okay to eat)
and what is overfished (need to
avoid)
- Also provides them with health
info, flagging species that
contain high levels of mercury or
PCBs
Current Issues…

HOW?
- Prevent overfishing
- Rebuild depleted stocks
- Minimize interactions
with protected species
- Create and conserve
fish habitats
How are all species
interconnected and why is it
important that we are aware of
that?
