Laboratory Activity 3
ENTAMOEBA HISTOLYTICA
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the exercise, the student should be able to:
Identify the cyst and trophozoites of E. histolytica;
Know the infective stage of the parasite;
Apply the knowledge learned in the diagnosis and management of amoebiasis;
List down some measures to control, prevent and suggest additional medication against intestinal
amoebiasis;
Trace the life cycle of E. histolytica as illustrated.
MATERIALS:
Prepared slides, compound microscope, digicam, Elmer’s glue.
Procedure:
1. Examine prepared slides of E. histolytica.
2. Draw/paste the captured images you found under the microscope.
1. What are the three vital organs of the body that can be possibly affected by extra-intestinal
amoebiasis?
A missionary returns home from abroad because of health problems. Principally, the
patient is suffering from weeks of acute colitis. The diarrheic stool sample submitted for analysis
is positive for occult blood, and trophozoites as well as cyst of E. histolytica.
3. If the disease cited above is left untreated, cite at least three possible complications.
4. Aside from examination of stool smears, suggest other laboratory methods that is more
sensitive in detecting the parasite antigen than the latter.
