CONFIDENTIAL BUTHM UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAYSIA FINAL EXAMINATION SEMESTER II SESSION 2013/2014 COURSE NAME : THERMODYNAMICS I COURSE CODE : BDA20703 PROGRAMME : 2BDD EXAMINATION DATE : JUNE 2014 DURATION : 3 HOURS INSTRUCTION : COURSE CODE (BDA20703) PART A: ANSWER FOUR (4) QUESTIONS ONLY PART B: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS CONFIDENTIAL PART A a @ ©) Q@ @ (b) BDA20703, A vessel having a capacity of 0.04 m° contains a mixture of saturated liquid water and steam at a temperature of 270°C. The mass of the liquid present is, 15 kg. Find: i, the pressure, the total mass, the specific volume, iv. the specific enthalpy, the specific entropy, and the specific intemal of the substance. Note: You should sketch the state of the substance on P-v or T-v diagrams based on the above condition. (15 marks) Discuss and sketch the closed system and open system, show the boundaries and energy transfer in/out of the system. (5 marks) Derive the equation for work produced by polytropic expansion process of an ideal gas inside a piston cylinder device when the process gone through an isothermal condition. In your derivation, show that the volume ratio (ViVi) equal to pressure ratio (P;/P2). (5 marks) is contained inside a piston-cylinder device at 500 kPa and 627°C, and it occupies a volume of 0.6 m°. The air undergoes a constant temperature process until the pressure reduced to 250 kPa. The piston is then fixed in place so that it is not allowed to move, and at the same time heat transfer process occurs between the system and its surrounding causing the air temperature reduced to ambient temperature of 27°C. i, determine the net amount of heat transfer in kJ for the above processes. ii, sketch the P-V diagram undergone by the air for the entire processes from initial to final state, complete with the axes values, points of each state and direction of the processes, (15 marks) Qs a4 (a) (b) @) BDA20703 Steam flows steadily through an adiabatic turbine (refer FIGURE Q3(a)), The inlet conditions of the steam are 8 MPa, and 530°C, and the exit conditions are 50 kPa, 82 percent quality, and 40 m/s. The mass flow rate and the change in Kinetic energy of the steam are 18 kg/s and -2 kJ/kg. Determine i. the velocity inlet, i. the power output, and the turbine inlet area, (15 marks) Nozzles and diffuser are can be conveniently analysed as steady flow devices. What are different between nozzle and diffuser? Sketch of them and explain. (5 marks) A reftigerator system consists of four (4) basic components use R134a as refrigerant. Refrigerant 134a enters the evaporator coils placed at the back of the freezer section of a household refrigerator at 100 kPa with a quality of 20 percent and leaves at 100 kPa and -5°C. If the compressor consumes 500 W of the power and the COP the refrigerator is 1.26: draw schematic diagram for a reftigerator with four (4) basic components system and label. (3 marks) ii, draw your P-h diagram to show the cycle of the process (including pressure, hy, h) (4 marks) iii, determine hy and hy (8 marks) iv. determine the mass flow rate of the refrigerant; and (G marks) v, determine the rate of heat rejected to the kitchen, (2 marks) (* use four (4) decimal places in your calculation)
