ASTM D97 - Standard Test Method for
Pour Point of Petroleum Products

1. Introduction:

Motor oil, or engine oil, is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. While the main
function is to lubricate moving parts, motor oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the
engine by carrying heat away from moving parts. This property is important for any application in cold climates.
Too high a pour point will result in the oil being gelatinous or even solid at ambient temperatures.

2. Apparatus:

Pour Point Apparatus with accessories

3. Safety:

Students must wear safety goggles, safety gloves and laboratory coat while performing this experiment.
