FNWS TASKS:

(a) Start counting from 1, and I’ll say when to stop.

(b) OK! Let’s start at 11 …21; 58…63 (An interviewer tries different numbers to find
spots of solid understanding or weak understanding.)

(c) Number-After
Now I’m going to ask you to say the number that comes right after. So, if I say 1, you
would say? [wait for the child to respond. If the child does not respond, restate the
question: “What number comes right after 1?”]

CARDINALITY:

(a) Put 3 cubes on table. Ask: How many?

(b) Put 9 cubes on the table in a straight line. Ask: How many?

(c) Rearrange the 9 cubes. Ask: How many?

(d) Screen the 9 cubes (if successful on c). Ask: How many?

(a) Count backwards from 10 and keep going until I say stop.

(b) Now, start from [23…16 or 72…67]

Now I’m going to ask you to say the number that comes right before. So, if I say
2, you would say? [wait for the child to respond. If the child does not respond,
restate the question: “What number comes right before 2?”]

Skip Counting

(a) Count counting by 10s, and I’ll say when to stop.

(b) Count by 10’s again, but this time, start at 22.

(c) Count counting by 2s, and I’ll say when to stop.
