Project Story Boost

Day 1: 1/15/19
This was the first day I was with my kindergarteners, so I spent most of the time getting
to know my kindergarteners. I have three. Lavayah from Mrs. Dollars room and Angel and
Stephen from Mrs. Reeves room. Lavayah was the first kindergartener that I read to. Before I
read, I asked her some questions about her family, things she liked to do, and if she had any
favorite toys. I learned that she liked Jojo Siwa and Vampirina. She told me that she has a couple
Jojo Siwa bows, a few shirts, and some Vampirina toys. I asked Angel and Stephen the same
questions and I learned that Angel likes Pterodactyls and Stephen likes dogs. Once I got to know
them a little, I read a book to them. This book was about children who built snowmen and played
in the snow. I asked them if they liked it and they said they did. They all said their favorite part
was seeing the snowmen. After that, I asked them if they built any snowmen over the weekend
since it had snowed. They all said no.
Day 2: 1/22/19
Lavayah was absent. When I read to Angel and Stephen they seemed to enjoy the books
that I read. I first asked them where they wanted to sit and then I asked them which book they
wanted to hear first. The first book I read was “Kittens First Full Moon”. They enjoyed this book
and they said that the cat was silly because the cat was always looking for milk where ever it
went. I asked them if they were the cat would they wait for their owner to feed them or would
they go out and try and find milk themselves. They both said that they would wait for their
owner to feed them. The next book that I read was “The Three Pigs”. They liked how in this
book, the pages expanded, and they were able to see different stories. They also liked how in the
end; the pigs gave the wolf some food. After I was finished reading them the books, I asked them
how their weekend was and if they did anything. They both said they just stayed inside. After
that they went back into their classroom.
Day 3: 1/29/19
Lavayah was here today so I got to read with her. I asked her where she wanted to sit, and
which book she wanted to hear first. The first book she wanted me to read was “May I Bring a
Friend”. Lavayah liked this book because she liked seeing all of the different people in the book.
Next, I read “Interrupting Chicken”. She thought the book and the chicken was silly. I asked her
what she did over the weekend, and she told me she played with her family. I walked her back to
her classroom and then read to Angel and Stephen. Angel and Stephen wanted to read
“Interrupting Chicken” first so I read it to them. While I was reading it, I noticed that Angel
would begin to point things out, like the chicken. I would gently remind him to wait until I was
finished because it might be distracting for Stephen. They both liked this book and thought it was
the best. Angel said he had heard this book before. They didn’t want to hear another book after I
read them “Interrupting Chicken” because they wanted to get back to class.
Day 4: 2/5/19
Lavayah was absent. Today, I read “Many Moons” to Angel and Stephen. They thought
the book was interesting, but they liked other books that I read first. After I finished, I asked

them about their weekend. They didn’t really do much. Once I was finished reading, I walked
them back to their classroom.
Day 5: 2/12/19
Lavayah was here today and I read “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble”. This book was
kind of long and she didn’t really like it. I even found myself getting bored while reading it. One
of the parts of this book was that Sylvester wished that he would become something else to
protect himself from being eaten and the magic pebble helped him do that. After we finished
reading it, I asked Lavayah if she would have wished to be something that had arms. She said she
would. Once we were finished, I took her back to class. I also read this book to Angel and
Stephen. They also weren’t amused by the book and when I asked them the same question as
Lavayah, they had the same answer. Once we were finished, I walked them back to class.
Day 6: 2/19/19
Today, I tried to have books that they would be interested in. The first book that I read to
Lavayah was a book about grammar. I thought this book was really cute, but I think Lavayah
was kind of bored with it. She told me she liked the animals in the book but that was it. After
that, I read “Giraffes Can’t Dance” She liked this book a lot more. When the book was finished, I
asked her if she would have made fun of the giraffe and she said no. She wanted to read the book
back to me, so I held on to it while she read it to me. Once she was done, I walked her back to
class. Stephen was absent today, so it was just Angel. He didn’t like the grammar book that well
either, but he loved “Giraffes Can’t Dance”. He liked that in the end the giraffe was able to
dance, and he said he wouldn’t make fun of the giraffe.
Day 7: 2/26/19
Today I had two books for them. One was about people going to the airport and one was
about a mouse who was a dentist. Lavayah liked the airport book because it reminded her of
when she went on vacation and she liked the mouse who was a dentist because he helped the fox
who needed his tooth fixed. When I was finished reading the boos, Lavayah wanted to read the
airport book back to me. When she was done, I brought her back to class. I read these to Angel
and Stephen, and they had a little different response. They both liked the airport book because
they liked seeing everything that happened. Angel liked the fox in the mouse dentist book so I
asked him if he would have fixed the fox’s tooth if he was a dentist and he said yes. Stephen
liked how sneaky the mouse was when he fixed the fox’s tooth.

Day 8: 3/5/19 (IWU Spring Break)

Day 9: 3/12/19
Today I read a book about a dinosaur who conquered his fear of swimming. Lavayah
thought it was really cool because it reminded her of a time that she had a fear and she conquered
it. After I read it, she wanted to read it back to me. After she read it, I walked her back to class.
When I read the book to Angel and Stephen, they loved it. Angel loved that it was a dinosaur
because he likes dinosaurs and Stephen liked that he was able to conquer his fear.

Day 10: 3/19/19

Today, I read a book about a dog finding his bone with his friends help. Lavayah thought
it was fun. She loved the dog and she loved that his friends helped him. She wanted to read it
back to me and after she did that I walked her back to class. When I read it to Angel and
Stephen, they thought it was so cool. Angel liked how he found his bone and Stephen liked that
his friends wanted to help him.

Day 11: 3/26/19 (Marion Community School Spring Break)

Day 12: 4/2/19

Today I read a book about a kid who made his first friend. Lavayah thought it was really
nice that he was able to find a friend so he wouldn’t be lonely. She read it back and then I walked
her back to class. Angel and Stephen thought the book was really fun. Angel said it reminded
him of when he made his first friend and Stephen liked how he was able to make a friend with
another kid in his class who liked the same stuff as he did. Once we were done talking about the
book, I walked them back to their classroom.
Day 13: 4/9/19
Today I read a book to them about pirates who weren’t good at being pirates. Lavayah
really liked this book. She thought it was super cool how the pirates did other things like make
sweaters and jam. When I was done, she wanted to read the book back to me like she always did.
After that I took her back to class and then went to read to Angel and Stephen. They liked the
book, but not as much as others. They liked the animals that the pirates had. When I was done
reading they wanted to go back to class.
Day 14: 4/16/19
Today was the last day that I was with Lavayah, Angel, and Stephen and I gave them a
book. I had a fairy book for Lavayah, a monster book for Angel, and a three little pigs’ book for
Stephen. When they all found out that I had a book for them, they loved it. Lavayah screamed
and hugged me and Angel and Stephen got really excited. Before I read the book that I had
planned to read to them, I read each of them the book that I got for them. It was so fun to see
them get so excited about a book.
