LGBTQ Day

Date February 20th 2019

Title A Classroom with Room for All
Presenter Joe Jamieson, OCT
Description Despite all the work done in Ontario’s education system to foster
equity, inclusiveness and safe schools, LGBTQ2S students still face
discrimination. Data from EGALE Canada’s school climate survey
released in March 2012 reveal that 60 per cent of LGBTQ students
feel unsafe in school, with 40 per cent of LGBTQ2S students at risk
of dropping out.

As part of its mandate to provide for the ongoing learning of its

members – who consist of all teachers in the public and Catholic
school systems in Ontario – the Ontario College of Teachers seeks
opportunities to offer its members skills and knowledge to support
students facing discrimination and to be the catalyst for creating
positive, inclusive environments in Ontario’s classrooms.
