An Overview Identification of a Community

a. How is this community stand out comparing it to others? Are there distinct
qualities these communities have to benchmark its stature in the area? What are
these?

As I have observed in the community, the residences in the barangay sampiruhan are
disciplined people. I think that this community is better than ours, because the fact
that there is cooperation within the community there will be development and fewer
problems.

b. What is your first impression? Or observations about the area?

Our first impression in the area of barangay sampiruhan is between of a rural and
urban. Also we thought that there would be no electricity in the community. We also
thought that people around there are not friendly and other things like drug-addicts.

But as I have observed it was the same as we have in our barangay and it was a good
thing that they are well disciplined. Also the main source of their livelihood is fishing
because they are near the bay. Some of the residences in the community are still
coping up to the trend and they are striving hard to survive. In our foster family, our
foster father, we call him kuya benjie, the source of their livelihood is their sari-sari
store and his work on a construction.

c. How is its general location in relation to other places?

The location is somewhat remote from the typical urban area.

d. Are there certain landmarks which it can be identified?

The first thing I remember is the Wonder Island which is popular to the tourist in the
area across it. You can also find the fish pens that the Chinese businessmen have
there. Pansol is near it and the road to Tagaytay can be seen when you ride a boat. The
laguna de bay which is very near to them.

2. Ecological Frame

The area is relatively small given the knowledge that it is a barangay yet it is near the
lakes of Calamba which is comprised mainly of fishing spots for the people living in
there.

2) Age. Level. Sex composition

Our foster family lives with his family and with his wife. He and his wife
don’t have any child maybe because of their situation. The younger siblings
are still studying, while the rest of siblings of kuya Benjie are married and
have worked.

3) Income

Their daily income was not disclosed to us but our estimation of their earnings
by fishing ranges from php 500-1000 per week and it also varies according to
season.
4) Occupation and nature of work
The work of kuya Benjie is only a part time job in a construction and
sometimes he help his brother-in-law in fishing.

5) Educational attainment/ Skills

Kuya Benjie finished his elementary while his younger siblings are still
studying at highschool. His mother works at a sari-sari store while his father
works ona construction.
6) Home Ownership

7) Home Conditions

Their home is rather small for a family of their size (8 people) and is made up
of used materials that they collected. Half of the house is made of cement but
the condition is bad as it was easily entered by insects and other animals. The
sanitation of the house is also not very good. Their comfort room is just a
small division of their house covered with cloth as a door and there is no
water facilities or sewerage so you need to get the water from deep wells
within the barangay. The electricity is fine but it serve them very few usage
and is primarily just for lights and ventilation purposes.

8) Religion

Their religion is catholic.

9) Origin

Kuya Benjie grew up in barangay Sampiruhan and knew each other for a long
time even before they are married. Their families also live there long ago and
they established their families within the barangay.
