Arm and Hand Shooting Mechanics

Letter “L”
In this case, the letter “L” refers to the position of your shooting arm. It should form an “L.” Here’s how to
get into the “L” position:

1 Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, weight balanced. Stick your shooting arm straight out in
front of you.

2 Bend your arm at the elbow so that your hand is up in the air and your arm forms the “L” shape.

3 Bend your hand backward so that the palm is facing up.

4 Basketball rests on your palm.

Letter “T”
Here we are using the letter “T” to get the ball and our
hand in the proper position for shooting:

1 If you are a right handed shooter – take your

right hand and hold our in front of you. Then
take your left thumb and touch it to your right
hand in order to form a “T.”

2 When you hold the ball in your right hand to

shoot, your left thumb should touch the side
of your palm to form a “T” position to hold the
ball in.

Do not place hand on top or in front of the ball...

These positions force you to cling to the ball as you shoot which slows down your shot and causes you to
pull your shot short.
