Why positive feedback matters?

The reason many of you ignore giving positive feedback is because you tend to take someone’s work for granted.  You feel that the
person getting the feedback is just doing their job. Those are the basic expectation, then why bother?

It’s wrong to avoid giving positive feedback just because you think someone is just doing their job. If everyone were just doing their
job perfectly, we’d be king of the world!! But the fact is, we are not perfect!

Giving positive feedback gives the individual a sense of achievement and pride. It does a world of good to employee productivity.

When done effectively, there are tonnes of examples of positive feedback that serve as a motivation tool.

What is the difference between Praise and Positive feedback?

There is a common confusion between praise and positive feedback.

You always end praising while thinking you are giving a feedback. This is wrong.

Praising does not focus on the speci cs. They are vague and generic one liner’s. They are casual in nature.

Going overboard with praise never creates an intended impact on the person receiving it.

Positive feedback on the other hand focuses on the speci cs and is only intended to have the person repeat the behavior.

Examples of Praise: Notice how generic and vague they are.

“You did a great job, thanks”.

multiple external teams. Thanks you very much”.
“I noticed that you have not missed even a single customer meeting. This enabled us to create an excellent relationship with the
customer. Creating relationships is very critical to our business and I appreciate your effort in doing this”
“Not everyone is creative. But the way you presented everything creatively during the recent customer visit shows that you have
the ability to think outside the box. It impressed all of us. You are an asset to the team”.
“You have a great eye for detail. You make my job much easier by reviewing all the details completely and keeping on top of things.
Good work”.
Thank you for taking the initiative on the new proposal. It helped us get a head start in our key market where we have visions to
expand.”

Guidelines to give effective positive feedback:

Be Timely and prompt:
Try to provide your feedback promptly and closer to the time of the event.
If you don’t provide your feedback on time, you lose the intent behind giving feedback.
Be Speci c:
Words have an importance in giving feedback.
Your intent to give feedback should be to make the person receiving it to replicate behavior.
Giving a vague or generic feedback will not help the person to realize the things done well.
Be Consistent:
Give periodic positive feedback at regular frequencies.
Don’t wait until something really big is accomplished.
Be Sincere:
When you give a positive feedback, mean it.
Don’t be casual while giving the feedback as it trivializes the importance of action performed.
Positive words:
Your choice of words plays a huge part while giving positive feedback.
Positive words show your sincerity.
Person receiving the positive feedback feels a genuine sense of accomplishment.
Size does not matter:
Don’t set the bar very high to give a feedback.
Setting a very bar just makes giving feedback very hard.
Any achievement small or big deserves positive feedback.
High Stakes:
Use positive feedback especially when the pressure and stakes are high.
