DESIGN
DESIGN OF ANCHORS
Design of anchor piles is done as per IS 10270 -1982 (reaffirmed in 2003) for generating reactive force to
perform initial load test on 1200mm diameter pile with anticipated allowable load as 375 T. Considering N value
<100, the corresponding unconfined compressive strength is 2000T/m2 based on bore log details provided by
client. 6 no’s of Cement Grout anchor pile of 150mm dia are proposed with 9 no’s of high strength tendons as
reinforcement. The top 14m soil consists of Black & brown clay consistency clay and the contribution of the soil
for anchorage is insignificant. Beyond 26.2m depth, there is presence of weather rock, stiff to hard clay star. Due
to small size of anchor pile, the contribution from fine and medium sand clay is less. Hence, in the design of
anchor pile contribution from N value > 100 strata are only considered and the details are given below.

Details of Loading
• Details of loading on Test Pile.
• Working load on Pile = 375 T.
• As per IS 2911 part 4- 1985, Test load on Pile= 2.5 times anticipate safe load= 937.5 T.
• Load capacity required from anchor piles for the test = 1.25(As per IS: 10270) x 1375T = 1171.87 T
• Load on each anchor pile = 1171.87 T/ 6 no’s of anchors = 195.31 T.

Load capacity of Anchor Pile

• Dia. of anchor pile=150mm
• Considering 9 bars of 15.3 mm tendon, Area of steel = 1815.3 (N/mm2).
• Ultimate Tensile Strength = 1860MPa.
• Ultimate load capacity of tendons= 3069kN = 308 T.
• With 70% Stressing, Ultimate load capacity = 215.6 T
• Ultimate load capacity = 215.6 T > 195.31 T.
Hence, designed Pile anchor system is safe

Capacity in Fine/Medium sand Bond Criterion

Weather rock and Browne hard crushing strength = 14,000 kPa.

As per IS 10270-1982, corresponding to above crushing strength, from Fig. 2,
Bond Value = 1500kPa.
Dia. of anchor pile=150mm.
Bond strength with a factor of safety of 3= 1500/3 = 500 kpa = 0.500 N/mm2
Required Bond length, Lb= 1953/ (πx150x0.500) = 8.28 Mtr. Say 8.0 Mtr.

Capacity in Grout bond Criterion

From Table 1 of IS 10270-1982, Allowable bond strength is taken as 0.3N/mm2

• Required bond length = 1953/ (πx150x0.3) = 13.81 Mtr. Say 14 mtr

Capacity in Passive resistance of Ground

Considering failure surface to be inclined at 450 to horizontal from anchor piles bottom outer surfaces, the Weight
of ground contributing to reactive force is determined as given below.

• Inner truncated Cone = 27x (π/3) x [(4.6252 + 4.625 x 1.4)+1.42] =843.299 M3

• Outer truncated cone = 27x (π/3) x [41.02 + 41.0 x 4.625 + 4.6252] =53495.48 M3
• Net Volume of earth = 52652.181 M3
• Considering density of soil as 1.5t/M3, weight of earth = 78978.27 T
• Factor of safety for mobilization of Reactive force = 78978.27 T / 191.53 T = 412.35 T

Hence, designed Pile anchor system is safe.

Recommendations:
• Adopt 6 Nos. of 150mm diameter cement grout anchor piles with 9 tendons of 15.3mm dia. Arranged
along circular path of radius 2.8 m around test pile.
• Anchor piles shall have a length of 27 M, i.e., maintain minimum bond length of 5m in weather or and
Hard clay.
• Fixed Length or Required
Required bond length:
length - The length of the anchor which is grouted in, from which the
pullout capacity of anchor is achieved. Cement grout which is grouted in the fixed length of the anchor
that provided anchorage.
• Free Length:
Length - The part of the anchor which is not bonded to the surrounding area and is free to elongate.

A) Total Anchor depth - 27 Mtr

B) Fixed Length or Required bond length - 14 Mtr from the anchor bottom to top.
C) Free Length - 13 Mtr from the top of Fixed Length.
D) Stands Length - 27+2 = 29 Mtrs

Note:

1) The corresponding unconfined compressive strength is 1400kN/m2 as per IS 2911 part 1Sec 2 (2010).

2) Natural clay of high plasticity was mixed with 20% and 40% sand (SP) and their compaction and
strength properties were determined. Results indicated that the investigated materials exhibited a brittle
behavior on the dry side of optimum and a ductile behavior on the wet side of optimum. For each
material, the compressive strength increased with an increase in density following a power law function.
Conversely, the compressive strength increased with decreasing water content of the material following a
similar function. Finally, the compressive strength decreased with an increase in sand content because of
increased material heterogeneity and loss of sand grains from the sides during shearing.
