COMPLETION OF STEWARDSHIP EXPERIENCE:

STUDENT FIELD TRIP TO UNM

Student Teacher Maria Rios Date March 29, 2019

Description of the Stewardship Experience:

The Spanish Department at Rio Grande HS took the AP Spanish classes and Bilingual
Seal students on a field trip to UNM to learn about the opportunities and programs that
UNM has to offer them. We visited El Centro de la Raza, the center for Hispanic students
which helps to connect to scholarships, resources, legal aid, and programs and
community activities. Then the students met with a group of Spanish professors at UNM
about how they can benefit from the various Spanish classes or programs of study
available to students at UNM. Then the students got to sit in and observe a Spanish class
at UNM.

Value of the Stewardship Experience:

Sharing this experience with the students, I learned that many of them have great
aspirations to move forward and plan big things for their futures. The only thing they
need is the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. I learned more about how to support
these students in different ways to help them to accomplish them their dreams. I believe
this trip will benefit me as a teacher because now I have tools and resources to help these
and future students plan for their futures and connect them to programs at UNM which
will aid them in fulfilling their dreams and plans. In sitting in on the classes at UNM, I
also learned styles of teaching and learning that my students will need to know to be
successful in college. I am now able to better prepare my students for their future success.

COMPLETION OF STEWARDSHIP EXPERIENCE:
BILINGUAL SEAL JUDGE

Student Teacher Maria Rios Date March 23, 2019

Description of the Stewardship Experience:

I was invited to participate as a Bilingual Seal judge and evaluate the candidates in their
portfolio presentations at Rio Grande High School. The students were required to make
presentations in both English and in Spanish, fifteen minutes for each. During each
presentation there were three judges, including myself, in the classroom. We evaluated
the students using a rubric which covered aspects of both their oral and written
presentation. After each presentation the judges were given the opportunity to question
and interview the candidates more in depth about their presentations. Once the student
left the room, the judges were able to review the written portfolio and collaborate and
discuss the presentations before we each made our final decision about the scores of the
student.

Value of the Stewardship Experience:

As a bilingual seal judge, I had the opportunity to learn more about the individual
candidates of the bilingual seal, what makes a good candidate and their future aspirations.
I also learned a lot about evaluation and assessment and in collaborating with other
judges I learned a lot about what other teachers and judges value and consider when
making assessments, and their concerns. We each have different perspectives and
perceptions of the student candidates. Collaborating helps to make a more well rounded
decision, and remove biases. I found this process very useful and hope it will help me
when making decisions about students in the future. I realized that as a teacher, I have a
great responsibility towards students and their individual futures.

COMPLETION OF STEWARDSHIP EXPERIENCE:
TUTORING SLA STUDENTS

Student Teacher Maria Rios Date Feb – April 2019

Description of the Stewardship Experience:

During this part of my stewardship project I was available for the individual tutoring of
my everyday students in the Spanish Language Arts classes. I assisted them with the
completion of assignments and homework and helped them understand better the lessons
and content that they were struggling with.

Value of the Stewardship Experience:

I believe that one of the most important things that I learned from this experience was to
be able to make connections with individual students and learn about them as people. In
working one on one I also learned about their individual road blocks, obstacles and how
to help each one individually. I also learned a lot about what was clear or unclear to them
from the lesson or assignments and in my directions or teaching. I learned what I needed
to explain more or better. I hope to continue working with students individually through
tutoring and conferencing because it helps me to understand what I can be doing better in
my teaching. In helping them to meet their goals, I felt that they it helped me to have a
notion of what a good teacher is and to help them as individuals and through my teaching
to academically be more successful in life.
