Drum Set Simulator

Overview:
The Drum Set Simulator is designed to make it so that it is as easy as possible to learn about
drum set, so the design is fairly simple. Participants will see a box with tin foil pads on it, and
next to each pad will be a picture of the specific sound of the drum set which it creates. They
will then be able to play around by themselves, experimenting with different sounds and how
they work together, and gaining a greater familiarity with the different parts of the drum set. If
they are quick to understand, I will show them a few things that are a little more advanced, such
as a rock beat, and maybe even a jazz swing if time permits. Participants will then fill out a short
survey evaluating their experience with the device.

Technology Used:
Makey Makey: Receives signals when the aluminum foil it’s attached to is touched and sends
those signals to the computer.
Scratch: The coding program for the Drum Set Simulator, takes signals from the Makey Makey
and turns them into sampled sounds from different parts of a drum set.
Laptop: Used to produce the sounds dictated by the Makey Makey and scratch through its
speakers, simulating a drum set.
Google Forms: Used for a survey which participants sampling the product will complete
afterwards to assess their experience.

Learning Goals:
•   To understand the different parts of a drum set and how they are able to interact with
each other.
•   To understand and experiment with compositional ideas using sounds from a drum set.
•   To understand how to make basic concepts such as a rock beat on a drum set.
