Lesson Idea Name: Explain Everything

Content Area: Exercise and Fitness Workouts
Grade Level(s): 9-12 grade

Content Standard Addressed: Standard 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and
skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The Universal Design for Learning principles can be addressed to extend
and support the learning experiences for every student by using Explain Everything in the classroom. Explain
everything has the option to record voice memos for those who could benefit from hearing instruction or
clarification, also it is visually driven for those who appeal to visual aids. It is self-paced and user friendly.
Lesson idea implementation: Students will be assigned an iPad with Explain Everything already downloaded.
The instructor or teacher will introduce the idea of creating a workout for a specific group of muscles, such as
the core, the upper body, the lower body, or the chest and back. They will then choose an area of the
body/group of muscles that they would like to create a workout for. They will research different exercises
that are useful for this particular muscle group and then create a 5 part workout in Explain Everything. For
each exercise, they must include an image, description of steps, and identify which muscle it will strengthen.
They must site their sources at the end of the project. Each exercise chosen must be safe and approved by the
teacher if questionable. The students will be given 30 minutes to complete this task. Student learning will be
assessed by their final product on Explain Everything, if the exercises have all required components and are
correct and safe to perform. In order to extend the student learning to a higher learning level, this assignment
could require greater detail on kinesiology and motor movement of the muscles during exercise, for example.
To further learning, the teacher could also require the students to present their workout to the class and
perform it to the best of their abilities. I will conclude the lesson by reminding my students of the many
benefits of exercise and physical activity, and how simple it can be to create a workout that is repeatable and
even sharable. Also, recognizing how many different ways that you can work one muscle group can add
variety to a monotonous workout. I will provide feedback to students about their work by reviewing the
Explain Everything projects that they create according to a rubric.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities that I created could impact student
learning by empowering them with the ability to create their own workout, which could lead to them doing so
repeatedly in the future, and possibly teaching others how easy it can be as well. This idea is designed as an
introductory activity to a unit of study, perhaps focusing either on motor learning and muscular movements,
or exercise and fitness training. With that in mind, to further extend the lesson, it would be a good idea to

assign one muscle group per lesson, or one type of exercise with varying equipment, like a resistance band
workout, or a dumbbell workout, or a bodyweight workout. Other technology tools that could further
enhance this project would be providing the actual exercise equipment for the students to use during the
creation and demonstration of the workouts.
