Lego Story Writing Unit

Grade 3
April 2017

In my 3rd grade Academic Challenge and Enrichment class (gifted and talented) we
completed a writing unit based on Lego characters and settings the students created. Students
studied character and setting developments, different story problems, rules for dialogue,
transition words, and descriptive vocabulary in order to create the culminating activity. The
culminating activity was to write a short story including pictures of 3 different Lego settings on
Google Docs. The stories students wrote were evaluated throughout the writing process which
encouraged students to reflect on their own writing as well as providing me with feedback on
what curricular decisions I needed to make to reteach concepts that were not understood by the
students. Students were encouraged to think deeper about developing a well thought out narrative
that followed a logical sequence. This entire unit integrated technology into the classroom by
providing students with an online form to write and edit their stories. The technology used and
the use of Legos motivated students to participate in this unit of study, as well as provide
students with different outlets to express their creative ideas and writing.
