Basic Productivity Tools (BPT) Lesson

Lesson Title A Story for the Key Characters

Content Area Algebra II, 11th grade

Content Standards MGSE9-12.F.IF.4 Using tables, graphs, and verbal descriptions, interpret the
key characteristics of a function which models the relationship between two
quantities. Sketch a graph showing key features including: intercepts; interval
where the function is increasing, decreasing, positive, or negative; relative
maximums and minimums; symmetries; end behavior

Technology Standards Creative Communicator

Universal Design
Rationale This lesson uses Microsoft Word which allows students to create a story
using their understanding of function characteristics (Multiple means of
expression). By introducing this basic productivity tool, students will develop
skills that can help in future assignments and post school jobs. The learning
experience will be enhanced as students apply their own creativity and
definitions of the characteristics while making connections to the content.

Lesson Idea I will begin the lesson by addressing the standards and the goals for the day,
allowing students to prepare for what is expected of them for the day. We will
review as a class what they know and should know about functions of
equations and their graphs. Students will then be given an equation that they
must use to create a story using Microsoft word. Students will be given class
time to plan and produce their story. It should take about 3 days to complete
and then we will share some of the stories over the next couple of days as
well. Students can be as creative as they want to be, but their learning will be
assessed on the accuracy of how the handle the “key characters” and what
they are allowed to do based on the content learned.

The final product will differentiate learning by following a story and

determining if the outcome is plausible based on what we know about
graphing equations. This also extends to a higher order thinking since
students must apply their knowledge in a variety of ways. The lesson will
conclude by submitting a rough draft each day and their final draft on day 3.
Grades will be given by effort on story content and accuracy of mathematical
content.
Design Reflection I feel like this activity could positively impact learning by allowing students to
create and produce their own demonstration of knowledge through an
interactive, technology-based tool. Many times, math is thought of as boring
because it is a lot of memorizing, formulas, and numbers. This activity puts
the student in control of what they need to show and highlighting important
components. Upon reflection, I think it would be good to have a peer review
day where they let another student read their story and give feedback. I also
think it would be good to look for websites that can help give story starters for
the students that may have trouble getting started.
