Lesson Title Poly-NAME-ial

Content Area Algebra II

Content Standards F.IF.4 Using tables, graphs, and verbal descriptions, interpret the key
characteristics of a function which models the relationship between two
quantities. Sketch a graph showing key features including: intercepts; interval
where the function is increasing, decreasing, positive, or negative; relative
maximums and minimums; symmetries; and end behavior.

Integration Level Level 6: Refinement

Usage Plan I would use this online project as a way to review and refine the students’s
knowledge of polynomials. This acts as refinement for those who fully
understand and expansion for those who are struggling in the topic. This will
be completed during a scheduled digital day where students will be working
asynchronously online.
Students will be asked to find the polynomial of given solutions that are given
based on the letters of their name. From this, they will find the different
characteristics and critical points of the graph of the polynomial they found.
Once the information is gathered, they will create a graph and put all of their
information in an online creation tool to display their findings.
Design Features a. Students will be able to work with their peers and mentors both inside and
outside of the classroom.
b. Students will somewhat be creating their own data. Everyone’s will be
different, but given a small starting point.
c. Higher-order thinking: N/A
d. Students will be turning this assignment in and will have the opportunity to
share with others who will use it.
Universal Design Students will be creating and explaining their knowledge in a way that helps
Rationale them learn more and how they can successfully show their knowledge. This
can spread things out for students who are struggling and allow those to
organize their thoughts how they please.
Lesson Idea Students will be collaborating with each other on completing the
project. The teacher will be available at all times to answer questions
via email, since this is taking place during a scheduled digital day. The
project will be introduced by the teacher going over the directions the
day before. Student learning will be assessed in the work they show in
their presentations and its organization.
The final product will be used to differentiate learning as it is a project where
students are creating. Student learning will be extended by students deriving
the math and telling why they are doing what they are doing in each step. The
lesson will be concluded with some students presenting their work the next
day. Feedback will be provided through live feedback and written feedback.
Internet Safety Students will be using sites that can be logged in through their school emails,
meaning these sites are provided by the school and deemed safe for
students.

Design Reflection The activity created impacts student learning as students are given the
opportunity to have control over what they are engaging in. This can give
them more confidence in learning math. The lesson could be extended by
having the students explaining what they are doing in each step and for some
deriving why they are doing it.
