Lesson Title The Repair Shop

Content Area Graphing Exponentials

Content Standards MGSE9-12.F.IF.7 Graph functions expressed algebraically and show key fea-
tures of the graph both by hand and by using technology. (Limit to exponential
functions.)
MGSE9-12.F.IF.7e Graph exponential and logarithmic functions, showing in-
tercepts and end behavior.

Technology Standards 1.1.a, 1.1.d, 1.2.a, 1.2.b, 1.2.c, 1.2.d, 1.3.d, 1.7.a, 1.7.b, 1.7.c, 1.7.d

This is an activity found in Desmos that can be given to students. It walks

them through content step-by-step while also giving them a challenge involv-
ing a real-world situation.

Levels

Integration Level Level 5: Expansion

Universal Design Ra- This activity enhances the learning experience for students because it makes
tionale students stop and think before continuing on and slowly takes them through
the content of exponential functions while allowing the possibility of peer col-
laboration or individual work, which depends on the learning style of the stu-
dents. The activity also provides different types of visual content and presents
key concepts in one form of symbolic representation.

Lesson Idea As the standards are addressed, the teacher is helping students go step-
by-step to solve exponential functions and guide students through the activity,
Students are listening to the teacher and engaging in the activity. The activity
will be introduced with and introductory story and giving students an end goal.
The activity should take thirty to forty-five minutes. Student learning will be as-
sessed in the process and steps they take to complete the activity.
The final product will be used to inform learning by showing how different
processes and steps can lead to the same answer. There are different ways
to solve problems in math, so sometimes if a student is struggling, it is good to
look at different explanations from their peers that could help in what they are
struggling in. I can extend student learning to a higher learning level by using
the bonus challenges in the end of the activity, the “Bonus Challenge”. The
lesson will conclude with having students share their thoughts on the Bonus
Challenge and allow time for discussion, ending with the my own thoughts to
give students insight on the Bonus Challenge. Feedback from this lesson will
be provided throughout the lesson and during discussions of the activity and
the Bonus Challenge.

Design Reflection I think the activity impacts student learning because students have the ability
to work at their own pace and in their own style. With this being an introduc-
tory activity to Exponential Functions, the lesson can be further extended by
having students make their own rules and seeing how it can affect the pay of
the employees at the Repair Shop. A technology tools that can be helpful and
further enhance this project is Khan Academy for those who need a tutorial
and extra practice on the content.
