Basic Productivity Tools (BPT) Lesson Idea

Lesson Title Sequence of Transformations

Content Area The content area for this lesson is Geometry for high school math.

Content Standards MGSE912.G.CO.2 –Represent transformations in the plane using, e.g.,

transparencies and geometry software; describe transformations as functions
that take points in the plane as inputs and give other points as outputs.
Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that do
not (e.g., translation versus horizontal stretch)

Technology 1.1 – Empowered Learner – Students leverage technology to take an active

Standards role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning
goals, informed by the learning sciences.
1.6 a – Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the
desired objectives of their creation or communication.
1.6 c Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating
or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models, or
simulations.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Remembering – Do students remember line symmetry, that they learned in
Levels middle school?
Understanding – Do students understand what is being asked from them in
the class activity and warm-up activity?
Applying – Are students able to apply their understanding to the problems?

Integration Level Level 4: Integration

Universal Design This lesson allows all students to participate in class. The activity that is
Rationale planned for the lesson is easily available to all the students on their
laptops, if any student doesn’t have a laptop or wishes to do it on paper, it
can be printed and provided to them for the work. For warm-up activity,
the students are working in groups so, if any student doesn’t have laptop,
it doesn’t matter, his/her group mates can enter the answer and he can
help the group by doing something else such as being a facilitator to the
group. These activities are very easily adaptable. The students can also
use different devices and talk-text, text-talk or translation software to help
them as their needs. This lesson builds on their knowledge of
transformations and translations. This lesson includes a warm-up activity
that involves Microsoft PowerPoint software.

Lesson Idea The students will do a warm-up activity that will refresh their memory about
transformations and translations. Students will work individually on the first
question and post their answers on the slide using the text box feature of
Microsoft PowerPoint. On the next warm-up question, the students will work
in groups and answer the mini-activity questions on how to verify all
alphabets through reflection. Each group will have a recorder in their group to
record their answers on a slide for their group. The teacher will walk around
the class and make sure every student understands what the task is. The
teacher will also make sure that all students are on task and working. This
task should take about 15-20mins to finish. Once this task is done the
students will be asked to move on to khan academy website and complete
the assignment on there, this activity should take another 20-30 mins. The
student learning will be assessed through the slides the created with their
groups.
The final product will be used to show how the reflections look on a graph
and how we will use graph in our future lessons. Students will receive
feedback on their slide work with the groups to extend the higher learning
level. This way students are able to understand the topic and excel on their
class assignment for the day on khan academy. The lesson will be concluded
by asking students to provide a feedback on what they have learned today on
the slide, again using the text box feature, this has to have the student’s
name on it for the teacher to know who said what. Looking at their work on
warm-up and class activity the teacher will provide feedback to the students
on their learning software such as CTLS, Remind.

Design Reflection Both activities, warm-up and class activity, help students to see how
reflections and rotations are different and how they can be seen in real-world
scenarios. These activities will help students reconnect with their prior
knowledge on reflection and rotations and also build new understanding
about the subject. There are other technology tools that could have been
used in this to further enhance the project such as Microsoft excel could have
been used to monitor the answers the students get for the class activity on
khan academy.
