Introduction
Americans listen to a lot of music. 91% of all Americans spend nearly 3.5 hours per day listening to
music. 75% of that music is provided by online resources (Perez). Free streaming services have
risen in popularity as a result of the demand for music. In the following report, two streaming
services, Spotify and iHeartRadio, are tested for their usability in providing music as a part of free
streaming services.
Methodology
Environment and Equipment
I will create one account for Spotify and one account for iHeartRadio on their separate websites or
apps. I will be conducting these tests on my personal MacBook at home. I will also be using my
iPhone 7 to conduct the “stream from a mobile device” task of the test.
For testing the usability of the streaming platforms, I will be searching for one song and one album
on both platforms. The song I will be searching for is “Happier” by Marshmello ft. Bastille. The
album I will be searching for is 21 by Adele. I am familiar with both the song and the album.
Tasks
After accessing the music streaming sites through Google Chrome, I will be doing to following tasks
for both iHeartRadio and Spotify:
- Create new user profile

- Search for popular songs
- Search for complete albums
- Save the songs or albums to be accessed again
- Remove songs and albums from saved place
- Change audio delivery settings
- Organize music
- Change Language in settings
- Stream from a mobile device
- Delete account and application from electronic devices
Metrics
Criteria Statements
The criteria statements for this usability testing is to judge the features are described as
the following:
- Efficient: The task needs a minimal amounts of mouse clicks. The program responds
immediately.
- Engaging: The streaming services are easy to use and take minimal familiarizing to be
able to navigate.
- Error Tolerant: Mistakes were easily reversed.
- Effective: The task was completed.
- Easy to Learn: The access of use will be intuitive. This is mainly a personal preference.

Task 1: Create new user profile
I created a new profile by clicking the “New Account” option.

The service requests to know my gender and birth year. The
website automatically marks that I want to receive emails
about updates. I will uncheck this for the sake of keeping my
email’s spam free. Then, I am asked to specify what I like to
listen to. For the sake of this review, I chose “Top 40s and
Pop” because it was the first option given.
iHeartRadio’s New Account pop up.
I decide to start my “30 Day free Trial” which is the first
thing shown once the create profile button is clicked. The
site takes me immediately to a credit card page and won’t allow me
to exit the internet page

until I have entered all
of the information. I hit
the “30 Day Free Trial”
button. The site
iHeartRadio allows me to select genres to listen to.
assures me I can cancel at any time. The cost per monthly subscription is $9.99.

Task 2: Search for popular songs
I as choosing to use the song “Happier” by Marshmello ft. Bastille as my song to search for.
Finding the search bar was difficult. iHeartRadio

does not have the search bar displayed on the main
page. When I clicked on my stations, the search bar
appears after opening another window. “Happier”
was the first song on the search list once it was
plugged into the search bar. The search page also
provided me with the options to click on two radio
stations that were playing other pop songs under
“Happier” and some album choices with the word
“happier” in them.

Task 3: Search for complete albums
The album I will be searching for is 21 by Adele.
I typed in “21” in the search bar. I didn’t specify albums so I was provided the choice between
songs, podcasts, radio stations all featuring “21”. I scrolled down until I found the album’s list.
Adele’s album was 6th on the list and didn’t appear until I clicked and was redirected to another
search page. The icons were small and hard to see.
The entire album was available to listen to. The page also
displayed similar albums to the right side. The bottom of
the page is a chat bar where I can chat about the music I
listen too.

I am going to save Adele’s 21 album. There

was not a button to save the entire album at
once. I clicked backwards and was directed to
an entirely new page that was different than
the search or album page.
I needed to search for the entire album again. I

repeated the same steps as in Task 3. The site
did not allow me to save the entire album. I
was requited to go through, song by song, and
save them individually.
When I saved songs to “my list”, the

notification popped up saying the songs had
been saved, but didn’t specify what song had
been save.

Task 5: Remove songs and albums from saved place
I was able to easily access my saved

songs under “My Music” at the top
of the page. The Adele songs
immediately showed up on the list
available for listening. I clicked on
the album. It brought all the songs in
order of how I saved them (which
was how the album was designed).

Overall, the fact that the entire album cannot be saved with one click is annoying. It is also time
consuming to individually go through and click each step. Also, it was annoying that the site kicked
me out of the album’s page.

Task 6: Change audio delivery settings
I was not able to find settings that let me

change the bass tone or audio delivery settings
of the music. In my settings and profile, the
site only allowed change of payment or song
preferences.
The fact that this feature is not allowed is a

little annoying, but I can understand why a free
music site does not allow it.

Task 7: Organize Music
Back in the “My Music” tab, I found a “Create +” button. Immediately, a pop up asked what my
new playlist’s title should be. I typed “Sad Songs” since Adele writes sad songs. The new playlist
icon appeared in the “my Music” dashboard once I hit “create playlist”. The playlist was empty. I
clicked on it. It asked me if I wanted to search songs. I clicked back, chose the Adele album. Using
the same three bubbles as before to add the song to the playlist, I found the option to “add to
playlist”. The “Sad Songs” playlist popped up as one of the options as soon as I pressed “Ok”.
When I clicked that playlist, the Adele song I chose remained in the Adele album and showed up in
my “Sad Songs” playlist.
This feature was straightforward to use. If the

reference to the symbols is not easily known, then
the action would prove to be harder to figure out.

Since I am trying to learn

another language, I need to
know if this site provides the
options to switch.
I looked around my account and

didn’t find the option. I went
back to the main menu. In the
options bar, there is “FR” on the
right side. Once I clicked it, the
screen reloaded into the
language of Spanish. The “FR”
changed to “EN”. If I clicked
iHeartRadio’s main page translated into Spanish.
“EN’, the language switched back to English.
This is really useful, but it doesn’t provide a lot of options. However, the task did not specify a
specific language. If anyone who speaks Spanish would like to use iHeartRadio, they are in luck.

Task 9: Stream from a mobile device
I downloaded to app on my phone. The app came up with a simple

search in Apps on my iPhone 7. The download was free. The app’s
lower bar is similar to the upper bar of the website. It provides a main
options library and such. The Adele songs and the “Sad Songs”
playlist are in there when I click “My Music”.
Everything that was set up on online appeared on the iPhone’s app.

This task was very successful and very efficient to do.

Deleting the account on the app was easy. I waited for the iPhone to walk me through its deletion
option by holding my finger on the app until it started to vibrate.

Results-Spotify

Task 1: Create new user profile
I used Google Chrome to locate Spotify.com. I found the

“login” link on the top right hand corner. Since I was not a
member, I found the “new member” tab.
Spotify wanted to know my first and last name, birthdate,

gender, password, and a “What should we call you?“ request.
I also needed to click an “I am not a robot” tab. There was
an option to sign up for to be a part of the Spotify user’s data
collection which I decided not to do.
It then brought me a page to ask if I wanted the install the

app on my computer’s toolbar. I downloaded the app which
took 30 seconds. Then the opening, welcome page popped
up on my computer as part of an app that was downloaded. Spotify’s sign up page.
The sign-up process was straightforward and easily accomplished. The application being directly on
my computer’s tool bar is actually a nice feature. The set up was easy and was finished in under a
minute.

Once again, I am using the song

“Happier” by Marshmello ft. Bastille for
search results.
I located the search bar in the middle left

portion of the app. The song popped up
at the first choice. The search also
provided access to albums, other songs,
podcasts, radio stations, artists and
other’s profiles mentioning this song.

Once again, I will be using Adele’s 21 to search for albums.

When I clicked the album, it

popped open with all the songs

Since the search bar is

permanently fixated on the tool bar, there was no difficulty locating the option for searching for
media. The media was easily found and located without difficulty.

Task 4: Save the songs or albums to be accessed

again
Now I needed to save the album. I looked for a button

to save the entire album. The three button tab next to
the album’s name gave the option to save the entire
album to my library. I clicked it. Once I did that, all
the songs highlighted with “hearts”. I clicked the “My
Albums” tab under the “My Library” section on the
left handed column. There was Adele’s 21.
This feature was straightforward and easy to use. Adding Adele’s album to “My Library” was very simple.
Based on previous experience with media, I was able
to deduct that I needed to highlight the three points
to gain access to hidden features. Saving entire albums seemed to be one of these features.

Task 5: Remove songs and albums from saved place
In the “My Albums” section, I clicked open 21. I located the three button option again. The tab
opened up and gave me the option to delete the song from my favorite’s list. The song was
immediately removed from the album.
This task was straightforward and accomplished without

difficulty.

Deleting songs is not complicated. The “three
dots” indicate an action toolbar is hiding away
Task 6: Change audio delivery settings the actions I need to customize the music.
I checked settings, profile choices and all over buttons looking for this feature. I found a setting that
allows me to “fade” songs at the end to streamline the listening process. However, this is not all that
I was looking for. Spotify does not allow settings to change on their audio delivery.
This is another music streaming service that does not all this service to their customers.
The “Crossfade Songs” feature is the only similar audio setting I could change.

Task 7: Organize Music
I wanted to create a new playlist. To create a new

playlist, I located the “create new playlists”
button on the left side of Spotify. Immediately, a
window popped up allowing me to name and
describe the new play list. I named it “Sad
Songs” because I would be using the Adele
album again. I was given the option to choose an
image which I declined. The new playlist
immediately showed up on the left column under
“Play Lists” category.

Despite my efforts in searching, Spotify does allow

users to delete their accounts fully. I was able to
delete the app from my iPhone 7 using the hold,
then delete options of the phone. I was able to
delete the application off my computer. I was able
to access my Spotify account online and through
the app (prior to deleting), to delete any payment
information. However, there is not an option to
cancel this account.

Both streaming services, Spotify and iHeartRadio, have their strengths and weaknesses. Below are

Spotify’s music streaming site is superior in their quality of free streaming accessibility. Their sites
were well designed making them user friendly. They offer a wide range of music to listen to as well
as save to playlists for further listening.
