Dear Parents and Guardians,

The fifth-grade team is pleased to announce the 5th-grade spring field trips. On Friday, May 10th, we
will go to rural Cresco to the boyhood home of Norman Borlaug for Inspire Day and on Thursday, May
16, we will go to the Minnesota-DNR Mystery Cave/Forestville State Park.

Norman Borlaug Inspire Day – Friday, May 10th

We will spend the entire day learning at Norman Borlaug's Boyhood Farm in rural Cresco. Dr. Borlaug
always loved talking with students of all ages. Throughout the day, students will rotate through 10
sections taught by Luther College education methods students readying for student teaching next year.
Lessons will be on science, global studies, math, & history, while incorporating Borlaug's life and legacy.
His wish for his farm was to bring people, especially students, to see how life was during his upbringing
and how everyone has the potential to do great things in his/her lifetime. The hope of the Borlaug
Foundation’s mission of educating our youth about Dr. Borlaug's life and legacy will be "Inspiring" to our
5th graders.

We will be outside all day for this trip. Students should be dressed for the weather. Layers, jackets, old
walking shoes, pants, and hats are recommended as we will be outside walking through prairie.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and water bottles are recommended as well.

Students will need a sack lunch for this day. Please discuss with your student whether they will be
bringing a lunch from home or having the school make a lunch. Students will mark their selection at
school.

The Mystery Cave/Forestville field trip will be for the entire day. Buses will leave for the site soon after
the kids arrive at school and will return by the end of the school day. Students should bring the following:
● jackets The cave is 48℉ and we will be underground for approximately 1.5 hours.
● walking shoes + socks No sandals or open-toed shoes, please.
● long pants The cave will be cold even if the day above ground is warm, so no shorts.
● lunch + water/juice There will not be any refrigeration available. If you desire, we can get
school lunches packed for students. Please return the bottom part of this sheet by Tues., April 30
indicating your lunch choice. School sack lunch options are listed at the bottom of the other side
of this letter .

Cameras are allowed in both the cave and at the historic site. No cell phones, please.

At Mystery Cave, learners will travel in small groups with a DNR guide who will lead us through parts of
the cave. We will learn about earth science concepts about cave formation and limestone bedrock
formation.

At the Forestville Historic Site, historic interpreters will take us on a tour of the reconstructed village of
Forestville. We will experience what life might have been like in 1899 and how industrialization changed
daily life in the prairie Midwest.

We are excited to provide this field trip opportunity to our students. If you have any questions, please
contact your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,
Matt Amundson, Alyssa Halweg, Sarah Nowack, Steve Peterson, Amy Suhr -- (5th-grade team)
