Subject Science

Grade Level 5th Grade

Learning Objective 5.7 The student will investigate and understand how Earth’s
surface is constantly changing. Key concepts include
a) identification of rock types;
Content

b) the rock cycle and how transformations between rocks occur;

c) Earth history and fossil evidence;
f) weathering, erosion, and deposition
In this SMART Board activity, the students will use the board to complete various
Pedagogy Planning

activities by either dragging, tapping, or writing and learn about the rock cycle.

Activity The objective of this lesson is to introduce the students to the

three types of rocks, the rock cycle, and the processes through
which each type of rock is formed. The teacher will first
provide a brief introduction of the three types of rocks,
showing examples of each on either the SMART board or by
bringing in physical samples for the students to hold and pass
around. The students will be able to use the SMART Notebook
lesson to become familiar with the rock cycle, starting with the
first slide. The teacher will put on the first slide in the lesson
and demonstrate the correct order of the rock cycle by
following along the slide with their hand. The teacher will then
move on to the next slide, where the interactive portion of the
lesson will begin. The teacher will explain the photo that they
see and then click on (1) Weathering. The teacher will click
START to show a brief animation on the topic. When the
animation concludes, the teacher will click the ACTIVITY button
to bring up the interactive portion of the slide. For this activity,
the teacher will call upon students one at a time to drag an
object, process, or action to the correct type of reaction. When
the students have sorted them all, the teacher will hit SOLVE to
see if the answers were correct. If they were not, the teacher
has the option to bring more students up to the board to fix
Pedagogy

the mistakes, or simply hit SOLVE to show the correct answers.

Once this activity is over, the teacher will hit MENU to go back
to the initial slide and move on by clicking (2) Sedimentation.
The teacher will click START to show a brief animation on the
topic. When the animation concludes, the teacher will click the
ACTIVITY button to bring up the interactive portion of the
slide. For this activity, the teacher will call upon students to
come up and complete the fossil puzzle by dragging each piece
to the correct spot in the outline. Once each piece is placed,
the teacher will click SOLVE and read aloud the paragraph on
fossils. Once this activity is over, the teacher will hit MENU to
go back to the initial slide and move on by clicking (3)
Metamorphic Formation. The teacher will click START to show
a brief animation on the topic. When the animation concludes,
the teacher will click the ACTIVITY button to bring up the
interactive portion of the slide. For this activity, the teacher
will call upon one student to come up and slowly drag the
circle across the bar at the bottom of the page. Once this
activity is over, the teacher will hit MENU to go back to the
initial slide and move on by clicking (4) Intrusive Igneous Rocks.
The teacher will click START to show a brief animation on the
topic. When the animation concludes, the teacher will click the
ACTIVITY button to bring up the interactive portion of the
slide. For this activity, the teacher will call upon students to
come up to the board and select the igneous rocks from the list
on the slide. Once they have finished, the teacher will click
SOLVE to show the correct answers. The teacher can further
challenge the students by having them come up one at a time
and write the correct rock type next to the remaining examples
using a SMART pen. Once this activity is over, the teacher will
hit MENU to go back to the initial slide and move on by clicking
(6) Extrusive Igneous Rocks. The teacher will click START to
show a brief animation on the topic. When the animation
concludes, the teacher will click the ACTIVITY button to bring
up the interactive portion of the slide. For this activity, the
teacher will call upon students to come up to the board and
correctly answer a question by keeping the answer as YES or
tapping that YES to change it to a NO. When the students have
answered all of the questions, the teacher can click CHECK to
see how they did. If corrections need to be made, the teacher
can bring students to the board to correct the mistakes or they
can choose to hit SOLVE to reveal the correct answers. Once
this activity is completed, the teacher will advance to the next
slide and click on the rock to show a Rock Cycle song from
YouTube. After the song has concluded, the teacher has the
option to advance the slide and have students come up to the
board and practice writing the words in cursive using a SMART
pen, or simply conclude the lesson by reverting back to the
initial slide and reinforcing the order of the rock cycle.
