Decision Making Experiment

The experiment aims to investigate variables that may affect once decision.

Independent Variable: Physical Attractiveness, Presentation of Altruistic Acts, Classical Music, Highly
Stressful Event, Frustrating Behavior

Instruction:

We are going to have a game. It is a business game. The one who earns more will win the
game. Suppose, the two of you are businessmen. You are travelling goods from Gensan to Koronadal
or vice versa. The goods are seafood products. You are using a freezer truck to transport the goods.
There are two roads that you can travel. The short but narrow road and the long road but wide road.
Remember that when I say narrow road only one truck can travel at a time. If you travel in the short
road, you will earn more money since it has lesser cost. In this game, you are going to travel together.

There are two light buttons. The buttons represent the road you would use (i.e., long or short).
If I say, “You can now transport” you can now press either of the buttons. If you will use the long road,
you will earn 900 pesos. For short road, you will earn 1,500 pesos. We will have 20 trials. Afterwards,
we will compute of your earnings and will declare the winner.

Experimenter: If the main bulb is on, it means that both the participants choose the short road.
State this, “Both of you choose the short road. Remember only one can pass through. You will have 10
seconds to decide. You can stay. Go back or will not travel instead or switch to long road where you
can earn less.” After ten seconds, record their behaviors.

Dependent Variable

Accommodate: If the they are stuck in the short road, the participant will give way. Or the subject keeps
on using long road.

Compete: Both participants will not give way or one of the participants keep of choosing the short road
and give little change for the other participant to use it.

Cooperate: Both participants keep on using the long road. Or they simultaneously using the short road.
So that they earn equally.

Passive: Both participants always choosing not to travel.

Combination of the subjects

Group 1

We would like to observe if physical attractiveness will cause changes in the behaviors. This is without
cover – meaning both subjects can see each other while playing the game.

You are going to recruit randomly 10 Physically Attractive Individuals and 10 not that Physically
Attractive Individuals.

You are going to have 3 types of pairs

a. Both are physically attractive

b. Both are not that physically attractive
c. One is Physically Attractive one is not that Physically Attractive

In the experiment, you need five pairs of each type.

Group 2

We would like to investigate if Presentation of Altruistic Act will cause changes in the behaviors. This is
with cover – meaning both subjects cannot see each other while playing the game.

You are going to randomly recruit 20 subjects. Prior to the game, you are going to let 10 of them to
watch a clip of an altruistic act inside the laboratory.

You are going to have 3 types of pairs

a. Both of them watch an altruistic act

b. Both of them did not watch the altruistic act
c. One of them watched the altruistic act

In the experiment, you need five pairs of each type.

Group 3

We would like to investigate if Highly Frustrating Task will cause changes in the behaviors. This is with
cover – meaning both subjects cannot see each other while playing the game.

You are going to randomly recruit 20 subjects. Prior to the game, you are going to ask 10 of them to
do this task. They are going to transfer 30 monggo seeds to the cup using chopsticks.

You are going to the have 3 types of pairs

a. Both of them did the task

b. Both of them did not do the task
c. One of them did the task

In the experiment, you need five pairs of each type.

Observational Sheet

Scoring: Mark Ac if accommodation was observed; Ct if competition is observed; Co if cooperation is

observed; P if passivity is observed; and, Na if no conclusion can be made or vague behavioral
patterns.
