How does your usage of Internet affect your school work? Group 6
For this research project, we decided to report on the topic of Internet usage, in
correlation to how it affects students’ school work. Most students within ASU are required to
complete and submit their work online. For this reason, our group decided to investigate whether
or not students tend to procrastinate more/less due to having to do their school work online. To
answer our research question, we asked a series of questions through a survey. We asked:
1. Do you have access to the stable Internet at home and if not were do you get access to
the Internet?
3. Are you less likely to ask questions in class and/or do you just look up the answers
6. Do you often get distracted/procrastinate from doing your work because of the Internet?
7. Do you believe that having to do your schoolwork online improves your grades?
In order to collect our data we utilized a series of programs. For our survey, we utilized
Google Docs Forms. We had a total of 90 different participants in our survey. We sorted our data
responses using Excel, which allowed us to get averages and percentages of our questions.

As seen above, the majority of students have stable Internet access at home. Only 6
students did not have Internet access at home, they get their Internet access from an ASU facility.

This question is a lot more distributed. 47% of the students stated that they procrastinate
more because their work is online, and only 11% stated that they procrastinate less because their
work is online. This shows that online course work has a negative impact on the majority of
students. By procrastinating, they leave themselves less time to learn the material and the overall
quality of their work would decreases. 33% of these students stated that they forget to even do

The results of this question were surprising. As shown, 64% of students were less likely
to ask questions in class because they have access to the internet. This leads to lower class
participation, and the overall quality of the classroom decreases as well. Less students are asking
questions, as a result there may be a lack of clarification in the classroom. There is a staggering
84% of students looking up the answers online, and this may negatively affect their education.
Although this might be beneficial in the short term for school work, it does not provide students
with a deep understanding of the subject and may cause them to struggle in future classes.

Here we made a slight mistake in making our question. Although we do know how much
time students spend on school work, it is not stated that this school work is done by using the

As expected, the majority of participants (72%) answered that they often or sometimes
got distracted and procrastinate when having to do their work online. This reiterated the results
of this research project, that Internet usage has an affect on many students’ school work.
Students tend to continuously get distracted by having to complete their school work online, as

The collected data for this question demonstrated that approximately 40% of the
participants did not believe that there was an impact with having to do school their school work
online, in correlation to having an impact on their grades. This was not surprising since most
students in college must complete their work online, they do not have anything to compare their
experience to.
From the data and charts collected, we came up with the conclusion that most students
spend around 4-6 hours on the Internet daily, and only about half of that time is spent on school
work. Since over half of the participants stated to often or always get distracted from school

work due to the Internet, it is seen that there is a correlation between the usage of Internet
affecting students’ school work. Related to the topic of Internet usage affecting school work, we
would have liked to ask how students avoid having the Internet affects their school work. For
students with high GPA’s we would like to ask questions relating to time management. For
example, whether or not they set specific time to do their homework and then seperate time to be
on social media. If we did this research project again, we would have included a few more
questions. We would have asked what gender and grade level the participants were. Then, we
could have identified if there was also a correlation between upper and lower grade levels, or
