Origin

• ‘Disaster’ comes from Greek prefix ‘dus’-”bad” and


‘aster’-”star”

• Used by astrologers in ancient times to refer to


destruction or deconstruction of star as a disaster
Definition

The UN defines it as ‘the occurrence of


sudden or major misfortune which
disrupts the basic fabric and normal
functioning of the society or
community’.
