Slide 1
This German poster is portraying the British as cowards. They have the British disguising
everything in their military as a church, that way the Germans wont fire on them. You can see
the ships and even planes are disguised as churches. The purpose of this is to make the people in
Germany hate the British so that they will want to fight them. The United States essentially did
the same thing to the Germans by banning the speaking of the German language in the United
States.
Slide 2
This one is pretty self explanatory. This is a sign for a factory which is building ship parts
encouraging the factory workers to work hard and is telling them that they are helping the war
effort by doing their job well.
Slide 3
This is showing an innocent baby holding a helpmate filled with coins. This is encouraging the
German people to contribute to the war fund. The Americans did not ask for donations in their
posters like the Germans did. Instead they asked the people to buy war bonds. The sale of war
bonds funded 2/3 of the Americans war. The American poster shows how a little girls father
bought her a war bond as a gift, this helped the US fight the war, and also will give the girl some
money once the bond matures.
Slide 4
This is showing how scarce resources are in war time. The US was doing the same thing with
their Liberty Gardens to conserve food for the army. The Germans wanted to conserve furs and
pelts for the military to use for clothing.
Slide 5
This is showing both points of view of the U-Boats. The Germans are trying to recruit people for
the navy and showing how strong they are. The US is trying to recruit people to buy war bonds
so we can stop the German U-Boats.
Slide 6
This American poster is encouraging the conservation of food. The soldiers need food so the
American citizens need to save it that way there is more left for the soldiers who are fighting for
the US. Germans didn’t focus their propaganda on food conservation.
Slide 7
The Germans tried to make themselves seem strong to their people. This poster shows German
soldiers who are bigger than everyone scaring the other countries away. This makes the Germans
seem like the villains and the United States never vilified themselves.
Slide 8
The United States wanted to encourage people to join the military. In this instance they are
promising them jobs when they get home which means that they can help their country, then
come home and support their families. Germans did not promise jobs to solders in any of their
posters.
