ALP.SS.3.3.1 apply strategies to reduce stress and protect safety, differentiating between
situations requiring self-help, peer support, adult or professional help.

Purpose of this session: To help strengthen students adult ego state in order to reduce stress

2 minutes – yes or no round, anything that you would like to talk about briefly regarding stress
from the past week?
5-10 minutes – Sharing, if anyone wants to share, in vent session.
3 minutes – Teaching balance using the plate – do you say that you need to do everything and
do it perfectly? We can do a few things really well, or even be good at a lot, but you can’t be
great at everything – eventually things start falling off the plate.
3 minutes – We cause our own stress by how we use these parts. This chair (CP of self) is a big
stress creator; the other chair (Adult) is how we can get rid of stress. We have to strengthen it –
just like working out. A lot of you have been working out the CP of self and not the adult, but
we can switch the focus. Today, one chair will be the critical parent of self, and the other will be
the adult. See if someone will volunteer to be the critical parent of self – leader will play the
adult.
Most of the rest of the time – Have member (or members) speak from the critical parent of self
part, and have the rest of the group guide me in the adult piece as to what I can say. When they
don’t know, I’ll say it myself and with signs. If a member feels like they can, have them play the
adult, but be ready to step in. Also be prepared to use creative techniques as necessary.
3-5 minutes – Going around, what’s one thing that you learned today?
