Define Problem

Problem, stated as an open-ended question:

How can we housemates prevent the resentment that is building up among us over our
messy environment?

Analyze the Problem

Characteristics (Shaylee MacFarlane): The symptoms showing there is a problem between

the housemates are constant dirty dishes, the grungy bathroom, people not sharing
responsibilities, cluttered living room, and simply the embarrassment to bring others over.
Creating a solution is difficult because of the different schedules between the housemates.

Stakeholders (Jordan Wager): The groups or stakeholders that are affected in this case would
be all the roomates involved. They each agreed on a having certain roles to keep the house
cleaned. Not holding up their end of the agreements can cause build up resentment and anger
between the roomates. Another stakeholder could be the landlord of the house/apartment. They
could be affected in result of their house property being damaged due to lack of cleanliness.
History (Kellie Peters): Roommates have come up with agreements or contracts in the past to
help keep the peace among each other. Having these agreements put in place in the beginning
helps everyone know where they stand. However these don’t always work.

Policies and Politics (Adam Perry): Adam is in favor of continuing to share responsibility to
clean.
- It’s common that everyone has a heavy course load, time might not allow for
participation.
- Landlord/Building Management most likely upholds a strict maintenance policy, without
complying we could lose occupancy.
- Arguments can easily erupt form uneasy housemates who may feel overburdened,
creating an “eggshell” environment.

Resources (Tristan Clemens):

- Walmart to buy organizing boxes.
- Target to buy cleaning supplies
- Crumbl to buy rewards for doing your tasks for the week

Criteria

1. Meets landlord’s expectations of management of the apartment.

2. Satisfies all stakeholders.
3. Fair and Equal job responsibilities between all the roommates.
4. Being open minded on feedback.
5. Share the cost of cleaning solutions.
6. Jobs must take no more than 15-20 minutes
7. Cleaning materials stored in one general area (Easily Accessible)
