Problem Solving

The topic of my first Interdisciplinary Project (IDP) was Suicide. This assignment was

completed in the fall of 2016, during my 10th grade year. In this assignment, I was asked to

demonstrate that many people who suffer from depression commit suicide and the society needs

to be informed in order to assist or refer someone who needs serious help. This IDP fits the

Problem Solving Category because my group was given the problem of suicide and we had to

find a solution to use to inform others in the community. We created a newsletter to inform the

community about the symptoms of suicide and how to help people that are suicidal.

The title of my 2nd Inter Disciplinary Project assignment was Heart Attack. This

assignment was completed in the Spring of 2017, during my 10th grade year. In this assignment I

was asked to describe the symptoms that people have before having a heart attack. This

assignment fits the problem-solving category because my group was given the problem of heart

attack and we had to find a solution to use to inform others in the community. We created a

poster to inform the community about the symptoms of and treatments for heart attacks.

A Student Learning Outcome that I met in both Interdisciplinary Projects was being a

Critical Thinker and Effective Communicator. By being a critical thinker, I was able to search

for relevant information from reliable sources. I was also a Critical Thinker by summarizing the

information collected in a manner that the group could understand. Also, I was a Critical

Thinker by brainstorming to organize information that would be relevant to the topic. Another

Student Learning Outcome that I met was being a Effective communicator by discussing and

sharing ideas to the team about how to prevent and decrease suicide. I was also an effective

communicator by providing information about the warning symptoms in the written format of

my role in the group project. Lastly, I was a Effective Communicator by presenting both

projects in front of the panel of teachers, guests, community member, and parents.

One area that I need to improve in is writing in English. Even though I am able to

communicate through my writing, I need to be able to write using academic and professional

language. One skill that I learned from the IDPs’ I can use in the future is being able to

communicate better with other people. Also, to be able to do research about a specific topic.

Another area that I improved was to speak up loud and clearly in front of the panel or people I

did not know. Lastly, my English vocabulary has improved in comprehension and writing skills

as well. Before, I had to pay closer attention while talking to someone in English in order to

understand others. The skills acquired will benefit me in the future for college, university, work

and life by helping me communicate with other people with professional language.
