In mass spectrometry, you want to achieve a significant amount of fragmentation.

To increase the fragmentation in an

electrospray, you use collisionally activated dissociation. You increase the skimmer cone voltage so that large ions will be
fragmented to useful ions that will help in the identification of the analyte. For example, in acetaminophen increasing the
voltage will decrease the molecular ion peak but will increase the analyte peak.

This phenomenon can be found between the glass capillary and the skimmer cone.

In the fragmentation of pentobarbital using electron ionization, 70 eV electrons striking pentobarbital creates Mo+ peak
(m/z=226) with enough energy to break into fragments. In chemical ionization, pento barbital bombards with CH5+ cation
and a proton exchange will occur, forming MH+ (m/z = 227).
