Our False Realities

Why is it that society is so consumed by being portrayed into the better half of them self.

Twitter, Facebook and Instagram is not as it seems. The people seen as trustworthy or “real” are

constantly fooling society into thinking that they are something they are not. On the outside and

in pictures, these so called “Instagrammers” can lie about many things like the size of their waist

or the shape of their face without really having to say a word; it is all in their actions. Just like

the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth by Shakespeare, the tragic hero Macbeth never had to verbally

lie to his people for them to think that his life was none other than perfect. Macbeth put on a

smile and no one ever knew what he was going through; he was a murderer, a Judas and was

easily deceived. The universal theme of appearance versus reality is also seen in today’s society

in social media, celebrities and the general public.

Anonymity can make a person feel tough. With just a click of a button any one can

become anyone they want. Social media was created to share a person’s adventures, and fun

times. Now instead having a place to share moment with friends, people go online to write mean

things, and to put other people down. Social media now is just a bunch of people hiding their true

selves behind a screen. An example of this could be king Macbeth, Macbeth was hiding behind

his crown; others saw him as a valiant king that had everything that he ever dreamed of, but on

the inside he was struggling. Not everything is at seems online.

Although celebrities look nice and pretty on the outside many of them hide so many

things from their fans even though they claim that their fans know everything. A huge example

of a celebrity hiding their reality is Demetria Devonne Lovato mostly known as Demi Lovato.

Demi is always showing her strong side to the world; she appeared to have it all together. None

of her fans actually knew that she was struggling with an eating disorder, addicted to cocaine,

self- harming and alcohol and drug dependency. In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth they are

similar to each other and other celebrities because his people looked up to him but on the inside

he was insecure, scared and just psycho.

Whether the people like to admit it or not the government and politicians run the

economy. There are many people who look mean and ugly on the outside but will be the most

kind hearted person on the outside but it’s even worse when someone who looks perfect and

well-mannered on the outside but is always judging and doing cruel things in the dark where no

one can see. Another example of appearance versus reality is the politician Betsy DeVos. DeVos

is a part of the United States Secretary of Education on the outside it looks like she cares for

students and the people but DeVos actually doesn’t care for mental well-being of those with

special needs. Betsy has been suggesting that there be a budget cut on the Special Olympics; the

Special Olympics are looked forward to by many people and is very encouraging for kids. Her

position might mean one thing but her actions are opposing. Just like Macbeth who has a high

position that looks as if he cares for his people he would throw anyone down to get to the top.

In conclusion, people need to stop judging others for their appearance. It’s hard to not

judge because the brain infers many thoughts on what it sees, but trying is the best to do instead

of criticizing others. Being true to oneself is necessary when the people around you aren’t who

they say they are. Just like Macbeth: insecure and fearful he made himself king to give himself a

title because he was lost internally. When he wasn’t true to himself everything fell apart. In the

end all that happens in the dark will soon come to the light.
