CONCLUSION
“What language to learn can often times be a very hard decision. Let us take for example English and
French, which differ a lot from each other not only in structure and pronunciation, but also in more aspects,
out of which we´ll mention only 3: that is, time required to learn it, cost and job opportunities. True, the time
required to learn a language may vary, depending on what level you need or want to achieve, how often and
— most importantly — how hard you study it, but if we take a look at most English Programs in our country,
most of them take around 2 or 2 years and a half to guide you from a beginner’s to an advanced level. In
contrast, if you are looking into learning French, you should expect a longer time to achieve a decent level,
which has also to do with aspects of demand. Typically, when learning French, you have to attend classes for
3 years or longer, as often, groups are closed because there are not enough to students to go on, so you will
need a bit of patience in the meantime. When it comes to prices, English is definitely cheaper than French. For
example, in El Salvador, an English academy costs between $35 up to $50 USD a month, and a personal teacher
could range from $5 to $10 USD. A course in French, on the opposite, can cost 3 times as much as English, and
for a private lesson, you should be ready to pay even $20 or $25 dollars. Finally, the fact that call center industry
has grown a lot in the last 10 years has made it easier for those who have a decent level of English and are
willing to find a job in English; proficient French speakers, on the other hand, are rarer than English ones and
therefore also better paid —in some cases, even 2 times more—, which definitely compensates the difficulties
found while looking for a job in French. No doubt: there are many aspects to consider. Sure, there will always
be pros and cons when it comes to making a decision about what language to learn, but the most important
thing is that you enjoy the process, no matter what your choice was. “
