Conclusion: state of the conflict, role of China, prepare for the future
“Water scarcity will unleash war amongst many countries in a near future. Firstly, water is
the most valuable resource on earth, necessary for most daily activities: from taking a shower after
work, watering crops that provide us with food, to generating power. Moreover, it is one of the rarest
resources considering that 97% of it is salty, while only 1% can be used directly; the rest is polluted,
so it is precious but also disputed. Now, the best example of how water scarcity can lead to conflicts
is the one of India and Pakistan. On the one hand, India counts on numerous rivers, most of them are
polluted, a big concern for a country with 1,3 billion inhabitants. Pakistan, on the other hand, has
less rivers —less people, too (nearly 200 millions)—, but relies almost exclusively on its agriculture
economy, for which water is a must. The recent dispute started since India built dams for the
construction of 3 hydroelectric plants, diverting water before entering Pakistani territory. The
situation is so tense, that it has escalated to international courts, like the Hague, with, unfortunately,
no solution at sight this far. Finally, that both countries possess nuclear weapons makes one fear the
worst. Luckily for the Pakistani, they have an important ally in China; otherwise they would be easily
outnumbered by Indians by 6:1 in an eventual war. As a conclusion, we humans must rethink and
change the way we deal with water as to prevent future wars from happening.”
