Preschool First

For preschool first, I had Jeralyn who is a little girl who is three years old, William, a little

boy who is five years old, and I had to switch to a new child because my other child that I had

moved schools because of transportation issues that made it hard for him to come to school

everyday. My new child is Elijah, he’s four years old. Since I didn’t have him earlier, I only have

a few things that he needs to work on, and the things that he is great at. All three of them are on

different levels with their knowledge, but I saw a lot of improvements with these children.

Jeralyn has improved a lot with her social skills, gross motor, cognitive and fine motor

skills. Initially it was hard for me to understand what Jer was saying, but throughout the

semester she has improved with speaking clearly and is more outgoing. When she wants

something, she will ask politely, and when someone hurts her or she sees someone who is

doing something they aren’t supposed to, she will come up and tell a teacher. Jer at the

beginning of this semester used to have a hard time going to the bathroom on time, and now

that the semester is almost over, she has improved a lot. I haven’t seen her have an accident

for several weeks. Before, I would see her have an accident almost every time I was in the

classroom. The one thing that Jer could work on is learning to listen to the teachers and doing

what the teachers ask her to do. She has a hard time sitting on the carpet without being in front

of everyone and blocking other children’s view. We would ask her to move on the edge of the

carpet and she would, but then she would move back where she was before like few seconds

after we would ask her.

William is very intelligent. I would say he is the smartest child in the classroom. The one

thing that I saw that he wasn’t very great at the beginning of the semester was his social skills.

William had a hard time finding friends to play with. He would always play by himself or he

would play side to side by other children. Now that the semester is almost over, his socializing

skills have improved a lot. He is no longer afraid to ask other children to play with. One time he
asked if he could play with this group of children, and someone said no to him, and William

started crying. I saw it happening, so I went up to the group and told them it’s nice to have

everyone play with each other. So the group let William play with them, so William was a lot

happier and thanked them for letting him play with them. William is a very great learner, when

we are at group time he is always answering teacher Hailey’s questions. I did a math scavenger

hunt for the children and William really enjoyed it. He could tell me what the numbers were

without counting the dots. He also would help the other children that were doing the scavenger

hunt.

The last child I had to observe was a little boy name Elijah who is four years old. He’s a

very shy little boy and doesn’t like to do a lot of the things that the class does. For example,

when we sing and dance he would just sit there and watch everyone do it. He also doesn’t like

being dirty so he stays away from all the messy activities. His communication is really good. He

talks clearly, and uses full sentences. His gross motor is great also. He enjoys riding bikes when

we go outside to play. He would spend most of his time on the bike. With his fine motor skills, he

needs more practice with cutting on the line. He would start off cutting on the line, then he would

be way off from the line. He uses his right hand, and can write few letters like R, O, E, and A. He

can zip up his zipper all by himself and put his coat on without any help. Today I asked him if he

needed help with putting on his coat, or zipping it up. He looked at me funny and said, “I can do

it all by myself.” Elijah can balance on one leg very well. I asked him if he could balance on one

leg and he showed me, then he started hopping with one leg. He also knows his colors. I would

point to a color and he would tell me. For example, I pointed to a picture and he could tell me all

the colors that were in the picture. I didn’t focus on Elijah at the beginning of the semester, but I

can see that he has improved a lot with social skills, cognitive, and fine motor skills.

Over the course of the semester I have noticed a lot of improvements with all three kids.

They all love to learn and experience all the activities in the classroom that the teachers planned
out for the day. All of their social skills have improved a lot. Today I saw that they all went out of

their comfort zone and played with other kids in the class.
