Chaucer’s Definition Essay

"It is true that we have besought the king for you, but your life is not yet sure". Chaucer

is known as the father of literature. He also was the first person to write in English. The story is

about a knight that disrespected a women and the rule is if you treat a women wrong you get

sentenced to death. He gets a chance to be saved if he can tell the queen what women desired. He

couldn't find the answer so he had to marry the queen if she told him but he didn't want to

because she was old. At the end he married her and kissed her and she turned young again then

he loved her. The topic of my essay is gender role and in this story women are equal to men and

they can make decisions.

This paragraph will be about gender roles. "They have to treat women equally. It came to

pass that a knight who dwelt at King Arthur's court forgot his vow to guard all women and

treated one despitefully. The law was that if any knight so faithless to his word should

straightaway be put to death" (page 1). If they treat a women wrong then they are sentenced to

death. They let women be equal and make decisions. "But this knight was a favorite at the court,

and every one of the court ladies, from the queen down, pleaded that his life might be spared.

They begged King Arthur for mercy so often and so earnestly that at length he said "I will give
him to the queen, and he may live or die according to her will" (page: 1). The King let women

decide things. In conclusion men and women are equal to each other and should be treated the

same.

Women and men should both be treated with respect and women should be able to make

choices too. He wrote the story to show that women and men should be treated equally. He also

wrote it to show that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. What you can learn from the story

is that everyone should be equal and treated with respect and that you shouldn't judge people off

their looks.
