Episode 091 – Regional information

Station 091: Transparency "made in Germany"

As an employee of the World Bank, German lawyer Peter Eigen had witnessed more than a
few instances of the negative impact of corruption. He felt compelled to do something about
it. His employer, however, wasn't very supportive, so Eigen decided to take his own course
of action and left the World Bank. Together with some people who shared his ideas, he
founded an organization called Transparency International (TI).

Now with chapters in more than 90 countries, TI is the biggest anti-corruption non-
governmental organization (NGO). By holding seminars and lectures, it raises awareness
among citizens, politicians and businesspeople. It also compiles annual reports, such as the
Corruption Perceptions Index, which ranks countries according to their perceived
susceptibility to corruption. TI founder Peter Eigen has been criticized for his philosophy of
"sitting down at the table with corrupt parties," and the NGO itself has sometimes come
under fire, for example for accepting donations from large corporations. Still, there is no
arguing the fact that TI has played a key part in the anti-corruption movement.
