Yu Xiang Kara Welcome Statement
are not only performers but also composers because we need to improvise during the performance.
Therefore, there are no jazz songs that sound like the same.
The purpose of the portfolio is to introduce jazz performance major to people who want to
understand more information about this major and learn the academic writing rules in the jazz
music field.
There are five aspects of my website, welcome statement, research of professor, journal
analysis, journal article analysis, and language analysis. In the research of the professor, I
introduced Linda Apple Monson who is a director and professor in my field. This aspect includes
her background, published journals, academic research, research interests, and academic
communities which is she participated. In the journal analysis, I chose a specialized journal which
named Popular Music, and I introduced the journal informational such as the history of the
publication, types of article in this journal, types of writing published, the structure of each
publication and so on. For journal article analysis. I introduced an article which is “Popular music,
gender and high school pupils in Japan: personal music in school and leisure sites.”1 I was not only
describing the rhetorical elements and structure of the article but also explaining these features to
suggest writing research articles in my discipline. The last aspect is the language analysis. I
analyzed the article “Popular music, gender and high school pupils in Japan: personal music in

school and leisure sites.”2 I summarized some academic language and grammar choices in my field
This portfolio provides plenty of information for people who are interested in jazz studies.
Furthermore, this information such as language analysis will help other international students and
myself to write an academic paper and find more resources in this field.
