THE NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY TEACHING AND RESEARCH FARM OF THE FACULTY OF
AGRICULTURE
The Niger Delta University is situated in the geographical Niger Delta area where the inhabitants are engaged in forestry, fisheries and
agricultural activities. The Niger Delta is Africa’s largest Delta. It covers about 70,000 square kilometers. Its ecological diversity is manifested
through the mangrove forest, fresh water swamps and riparian forest. The zone is endowed with diverse natural resources; the output of
manpower in the various aspects of agriculture, fisheries, livestock, food science and forestry becomes very imperative. There is no higher
institution in this zone awarding degrees in agriculture and allied areas. It therefore becomes exigent to establish a faculty of agriculture in the
Niger delta University to meet these needs.
Philosophy of the faculty
The faculty has its aim in the training of production-oriented graduates in the various fields of Agriculture, forestry, fishery, livestock and food
science. Most of the graduates of the faculty are expected to be self-employed, and to generate employment for others. Others may find
employment in Agriculture and related establishments of the Federal and state Government, banks, oil companies and private enterprises related
to agriculture
Objective
 To develop programmes covering the broad areas of agriculture, forestry, livestock, and food science.
 To turn out production-oriented graduates in agriculture, forestry and fisheries by making it mandatory for each student to maintain a plot in
the field, a pen of animals or be in a team to manage fish ponds, from the second to the final year.
 To train personnel capable of teaching and conducting relevant research on crops, soils, Fisheries, livestock, forestry/wildlife production,
economics and rural development.
 To produce graduates who will profitably put their skills into operation be establishing and operating their own farms, hotels, food and
related enterprises.

Definition of Terms
Research: this is a careful and detailed study into a specific problem, concerned, or issued using the scientific method. It is the adult form of the
science fair projects back in elementary school, where you try and learn something by performing an experiment.
Teaching: this is the concerted sharing of knowledge, experience, which is usually organized within a discipline and more.
Teaching and research farm

Introduction
The teaching and research farm have different extensive workers and segments based on their areas of specialization, therefore, the service they
render is of different kinds like; crop production, fisheries, animal science and agricultural economic. Which helps as a ground of studies or in an
experimental work design. Because of its creativity that has led to the production of eggs, fish, meat and plantain and it creates special ideas on
the cost and qualities of various farm products.
