Reflection on Assessment Case Study

What is it and under what conditions was it created?

This assignment was completed as part of the Literacy 765 course. While taking the course, I
administered a number of assessments with a 6-year-old boy. After conducting the
assessments, I analyzed the results, and recommended next steps to move him forward with
reading and writing.

Why did you select it for this section?

I placed this artifact in the Skillful Practitioner section of my portfolio, because it shows how I
used assessment results to recommend individualized instructional approaches to fit the needs
of the learner. In the case study, I also recognized that the child did not like writing, and I
suggested ways for him to possibly shift his attitudes about writing. This shows that I was
considering his social and emotional needs, as well as trying to get him more engaged and
motivated to write.

Growth and change?

This was my first attempt at writing a case study, so I had to do some research before I began.
While I was teaching, I don’t believe I ever did such an in-depth write-up of a student. I would
write short paragraphs of observations for IEPs or report cards, but focusing so much attention
on one child’s individual needs was a rewarding experience. I only met with the student for two
short sessions, but I am confident that I had an accurate insight on his needs as a literacy
learner.

Moving forward, I think it would be very beneficial to do something similar with all students
when I return to teaching. It would be difficult to find time to write up a four page case study
on each child, but I need to find a better system for organizing assessment results, and
recording next steps. This would help me better meet the needs of each individual learner.
