NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma Financial Education Association held its first Money Smart
Conference this past week. Money- management expert Bob Barkker was the keynote speaker.
“We hoped that this conference would helped introduce college students to different
resources available for them,” said Mike Hinderman, senior MoneyCoach for the University of
Oklahoma. “By partnering with the Oklahoma Financial Education Association, we were able to
bring some of these resources straight to students. The goal for the conference is showcase the
different resources that the Oklahoma Financial Education Association can offer.”
Hinder said another goal for the conference was not only to teach basic financial skills.
The conference hosted around 500 attendees that included both college students and high school
“Hopefully the success of this year’s event will inspire hopes the conference can become
a yearly tradition at the University of Oklahoma,” said Hinder. “By looking what a great turnout
we had, we see that not only do students want to learn this information, but they are eager to
learn it.”
Hinder said Barkker was selected to speak after the success of his book, Steps of Money
Management. The book was released in the summer of 2018 and is geared towards helping

has a fast knowledge of financial skills such as investing and budgeting and has this gift for
explaining it others.”
that the organization will hold the event next year on April 7 at Oklahoma State University.
“It is great that we have had so much success with providing resources for the University
of Oklahoma but we want to extend further than that,” Wilson said. “We chose to hold the event
at Oklahoma State University next year to make ourselves more accessible and to reach even
more students.”
The Oklahoma Financial Education Association is dedicated to serving Oklahoma and its
incoming workforce of college graduates. The Oklahoma Financial Education Association works
to educate young adults with skills such as budgeting and saving to make more well-informed
