Oklahoma Financial Education Association sets record attendance at Smart

Money Week
Oklahoma Financial Education Association recently hosted Smart Money Week in partnership
with the University of Oklahoma.

NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma Financial Education Association held its first Money Smart

Conference this past week. Money- management expert Bob Barkker was the keynote speaker.

“We hoped that this conference would helped introduce college students to different

resources available for them,” said Mike Hinderman, senior MoneyCoach for the University of

Oklahoma. “By partnering with the Oklahoma Financial Education Association, we were able to

bring some of these resources straight to students. The goal for the conference is showcase the

different resources that the Oklahoma Financial Education Association can offer.”

Hinder said another goal for the conference was not only to teach basic financial skills.

The conference hosted around 500 attendees that included both college students and high school

students from the local area.

“Hopefully the success of this year’s event will inspire hopes the conference can become

a yearly tradition at the University of Oklahoma,” said Hinder. “By looking what a great turnout

we had, we see that not only do students want to learn this information, but they are eager to

learn it.”

Hinder said Barkker was selected to speak after the success of his book, Steps of Money

Management. The book was released in the summer of 2018 and is geared towards helping

young adults making financial decisions.

has a fast knowledge of financial skills such as investing and budgeting and has this gift for

explaining it others.”

Oklahoma Financial Education Association’s Executive Director Stephanie Wilson said

that the organization will hold the event next year on April 7 at Oklahoma State University.

“It is great that we have had so much success with providing resources for the University

of Oklahoma but we want to extend further than that,” Wilson said. “We chose to hold the event

at Oklahoma State University next year to make ourselves more accessible and to reach even

more students.”
