“Folio Thinking”

Folio thinking is a process of engaging in the collection, organization, reflection and

connection that leads to a person’s ability to speak intelligently and concisely (i.e. tell stories)

about one’s learning experiences, what they mean and their value, and how the experiences relate

one to each other (Folio Thinking). This can be expressed with an ePortfolio. An ePortfolio

allows a student to document their work in a constructive and creative type of way. The student

is able to take a look back on the progress they have made. I am new to using and ePortfolio but

the longer I use it the more comfortable I am with it and I really enjoy it. I am able to design and

really make it my own. A big reason that I like the idea of an ePortfolio is that I am able to save

all of my documents. Not everyone has the same computer or all their files on a flash drive. At

any time, I can log into my ePortfolio from anywhere, and pull up a file that I have saved. It is

genius. Folio thinking is a branch out of an ePortfolio. Folio thinking allows you to be creative

with your collection of work.

Assessment of learning and assessment for learning does play a role in using an

ePortfolio. The difference between assessment of learning and assessment for learning is a matter

of function and purpose–a matter of ‘who’: assessment of learning is a way to see what the

students can do while assessment for learning is a way to see what the teachers should do in

response (The Difference Between Assessment of Learning and Assessment for Learning.)
Assessments of learning is taking what a student knows and comparing that knowledge to a scale

or to other students. An example of this is benchmark testing. Assessments for learning is

regularly monitoring the students understanding and comprehension of a subject. With this

information the teacher is able to provide an action course for the student to get the help if

needed.

Using an ePortfolio can be very useful for assessments of learning and assessments for

learning. It really allows the student to be creative and do the work in their own way. This is

great for the teacher to have a better understanding if the student really understands and is

comprehending the information needed. After the student presents his work the teacher is then

able to give some type of feedback of the work. This is great because it allows then for the

student to go back, reflect on that information and make changes. Using an ePortfolio the

students are able to also interact with each other and provide peer reviews and feedback. This

can be helpful for everyone in this situation. Being able to do this is a way of learning that some

students thrive on. It is not just focusing on grades and exams it is allowing the student to really

understand and captivate the information. The students are held accountable to provide, reflect

and understand the information. Although an ePortfolio can be intimidating, they can be very

useful for both the students and the teachers.
