Wednesday, Nov. 14:

CUB SCOUTS BEGIN ANNUAL SCOUTING FOR FOOD DRIVE

The annual Scouting for Food program has begun, and that means local Cub Scouts will be going
out door to door to collect food for the needy.

The food drive is held each year by the Cub Scouts of America. The goal of the project is to get
people to donate canned goods and other nonperishable items that are then distributed to local
charities.

The fact that the food goes to local charities is one of the most important reasons for the drive,
says Cubmaster Dan Lethcoe, a leader of Pack 240 in Gray, Tenn.

“It is a great opportunity for our scouts to give back to the local community. The boys get to
learn about helping others, and they also get to help their very own friends and neighbors.”

The Cub Scouts began distributing bags on Nov. 10 and will continue to hand out bags door to
door until Nov. 24. The following day, they will pick up the bags.

Den leader Vickie Roberts says that one of the best parts of the food drive is convenience. “All
the homeowner has to do is leave the bag hanging on their door with the food in it and we come
and pick it up.”

Roberts said a group of Cubs will walk around and pick up the bags over the course of several
hours. Then a second group will come behind the first group to make sure no bags were missed.

Once the food is collected, the Cub Scout leaders will sort the food and take it to local charities
like the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Alex Conrad, a young Cub Scout who helped to bring bags door to door, said he really loves
helping out with the food drive. He said he likes helping other people who may not have as
much.

That is the kind of thing that Lethcoe likes to hear. “Our boys really learn a lot from this, and it
helps them to have a sense of charity and giving.”

The Scouting for Food program began with the Boy Scouts of America. The Cub Scouts of
America are a division of the Boy Scouts that is for boys in the first through fifth grades.

The Boy Scouts of America were founded in 1910 and are one of the largest youth organizations
in the country. More information on the Boy Scouts and the Cub Scouts can be found at their
website, www.scouting.org.
