Aquaponics Weekend Course

25th & 26th May 2019

Course day 1
Saturday morning 9:30am -1pm

On arrival it is a welcome from the Urbanag team, and set the house rules

1. Introduction to the course – It’s purpose and content


2. An introduction to aquaponics covering:-
a. What Urbanag means when we talk about aquaponics.
b. A little history from the Virgin Islands in the late 1960’s to the present day
c. Why aquaponics is aquaculture and hydroponics all at the same time in closed
circular system
3. Introducing Graham’s AP general concept model – (separate sheet)
4. A very brief introduction to Fish and plant needs
5. Dimensions and capacity for an AP system – what works for you – working with a formula
6. Design considerations of basic model
a. Fish tank shape and dimension ratios
b. Biofilter
c. Pumps and pipes
d. Grow beds

Saturday 1pm – 2pm Lunch

 Over lunch tutors will be around for informal chats questions etc.

Saturday afternoon 2pm - 5pm

1. Considering materials and construction and especially


a. Electrical requirements
b. Plumbing requirements – oversized pipes and sharp bends
2. Short discussion on tools and there use – what’s needed and health and safety
3. Model construction/plan. Students break into groups and decide either to:
a. Make a small model or working plan of proposed kit using either site’s dimensions
or their own if they have a site in mind.
b. Make a lifsize model laying out materials and equipment on site for proposed
aquaponics setup
4. These can be as sophisticated or crude/simple as you like so long as you can then
present your model/plan and hold a group discussion thereof
5. Summary and discussion

Aquaponics Weekend Course

Course day 2
Sunday 9:30am - 1pm

1. Finish off presenting your model/plan and group discussion (if needed)
2. What can possibly go wrong?
a. Solids, floods and drainage
b. Touch upon water quality issues
c. General discussion on common engineering fowl ups
3. Having confidence in your model – creating what you wanted and not just with what you
end up with – little scope for making it up as you go along
4. Managing a system – understanding the processes and parameters and monitoring
them
5. General discussion with questions/answers

Sunday 1pm – 2pm Lunch

 Over lunch tutors will be around for informal chats questions etc.

Sunday 2pm – 3:30pm

 Course assessment and 360 feedback


 Clear down work areas, materials, and equipment
 Tutors will be around for informal chats questions etc.
