Are four lane highways causing epic chain reactions of unnecessary events? South
Central Alabama four-lane highways are consistently clogged and congested. During collisions
and motorway repairs drivers experience long delays or standstill traffic jams. People must sit
and wait patiently for Emergency Services to arrive to clear or repair whatever is in the lanes
until it's fixed to continue their journeys. There are no shoulder lanes on these long motorways.
People still attempt to create their own shoulder lane by illegally merging outside of the passing
or inner lanes and when they do, they're met by police citing them or giving a ticket. Add with
this local news driving unlawfully outside of the traffic lanes to show up on the location to create
eye witness report on the often-minor incident. Police turn a blind eye for them. Travelers are not
even allowed to cross on the median separating I-85 to head in the opposite direction of the
clogged lanes Drivers planning to merge from Exit 38 onto the highway come to a complete halt
due to infrastructure building construction and no third lane onto which oncoming traffickers
may turn. When at a standstill the Chris Christie scandal harks back to mind and you feel
completely stuck & claustrophobic. Eighteen wheelers sometimes hog both the inner and outside
lanes for tens of minutes to stifle general traffic flow. The problem is that this method is
probably more efficient on multi-lane roads, not ours. Plus, it isn’t rare to find oneself being
tailgated extremely closely for about 5 miles while doing the speed limit and not in the passing
lane. More space has got to be created before further transport degradation ensues on our
highways.
These motorway jams are a huge problem and need immediate attention, and fundamental
analysis to solve this solution. How many taxpayers, travelers, locals, and citizens can afford
to be late for work? How many employers like lost productivity with their company due to
hostile highways? Are hospitals being financially inundated by restrictive byways and highways
and congested traffic where residents had to rush to work because commuters were late for
work? Where can the drivers with serious emergencies go when they’re stuck when they can get
to their location just as fast if not faster than emergency services can by illicitly driving off the
roads? Additionally, our population has increased exponentially and Exit 38 sits between two
college towns. It's obvious that a chain reaction of unnecessary events occurs stemming from
outdated four lane highways on Exit 38.
Since highways (and majority roads and easement) belong to the state, they’re public. So, I
will address this to the Alabama Department of Transportation, specifically the construction
design and local transportation units. As I do my own research, I find It is critical that the civil
engineers explore ways to construct something to create a more decongested highway. The
government-employed environmental engineers should be duly liable in this project. My findings
should be heard by management. All required data and appropriate findings across all genres
from governmental geologist to geographic information system technicians need to be collected
to support my proposal. The people who would be greatly impacted in a positive way from my
work will be locals, regional commuters, the injured, the elderly, college students and everyone
traveling up and down the highway daily. Construction workers would have more leeway than
just outside the lines of the lanes’ capacity to continue work without risking being injured. I
suspect there will also be less road rage and more people getting to work on time without waiting
hours to do so. Taxpayers will be more at ease and will have more confidence in their
government. Those in labor or afflicted with an injury that need immediate medical attention
wouldn't need to be flown to a nearby hospital or wait to be transported to one. First responders
will also have more room to speed through traffic with significantly more ease. I will also
address state senators to accelerate the proposal process and seek to amend the laws of subjects
on passing on highways.
The resources I have available to conduct my research on this proposal are DSLR cameras,
Alabama GIS maps, applied geometry, and a basic schematic diagram. Additionally, I will relate
published articles on motorway mechanics and apply some of the techniques to the research. The
Geometry will be utilized just in case of highway misalignment from suggesting adding
additional lanes. Photographs will be taken pinpointing the most troubled areas on the road. The
diagrams will be used to illustrate structural ideas and to chart our population growth from a
decade prior. I will also provide ideas so that funds needed are budget friendly.
The sooner we can begin to implement the necessary changes that this project has identified,
the better will be the health, safety and peace of mind of our community.
