● Reading period: “Summing Up the Session: A Study of Student, Faculty, and
Tutor Attitudes Toward Tutor Notes” by Bugdal, Reardon, and Deans

2:45 - 3:00 PM:


● Small group discussion about the reading

3:00 - 3:05 PM:


● Introduction: Introduce the purpose of this seminar
● Brainstorm main areas of concern regarding the RoC together
○ Who are the audiences of RoCs?
○ How do these groups use RoCs?
○ Why do we use RoCs?

3:05 - 3:30 PM:


● Activity:
○ Consultants break into groups of 3-4
○ Hand out 6 sample RoCs
○ Groups will work together to determine the rhetorical situation of a typical
consultation, identify the conventions of the RoC genre based on the
given samples, and analyze why these are important

3:30 - 3:45 PM:


● Discuss the activity
○ Each group will share their results and compare
○ Write down results on the board as groups share to compile a general list
of conventions and functions of RoCs

3:45 - 4:00 PM:


● Discuss the implications
○ How can we use the list of conventions we compiled in everyday
consultations?
○ How do RoCs fit into studio and writing center pedagogy?
○ How can we fit into the conventions of the RoC genre? How and when
can we break the rules?
