FIREGIRL LESSON 6

Chapters 15 & 16

Words, Phrases, and Figurative Language
At the top of page 105, Tom tells us this: I couldn’t believe, didn’t want to believe, it was
really going to happen, because I didn’t want to get suckered into waiting for the car to come.
I wasn’t sure that it even meant anything to me anymore. What does Tom mean by the
word “suckered” here?

On page 105, the text says this: By Thursday morning, when Jeff was still at it with his
“Cobra, Cobraman, or, yeah,” a thought was beginning to grow inside me, as if it was
swimming up from somewhere deep down. And the thought was that maybe I deserved this.
What thing/object is being brought to life here? And why might the author do this?

Similarly, on page 113, Tom narrates: The something inside me was oozing into my stomach
now. What was it? Not anger, not yet. Almost, but not yet. It was something else.
a. What does the word “oozing” mean?

b. How does this word change how you understand the text?

Identify an additional word or phrase you may not have known before reading and explain
how you can use context clues for that particular word/phrase to determine its meaning.
