WINDING DRUM ELEVATOR

Function of Winding Drum

The winding drum performs the dual function of winding the yarn on to the package (cone or
cheese) and traversing it longitudinally. Thus it builds the package diametrically and
longitudinally. In other words, it decides the dimensions of the full cheese or cone. The
cylindrical drum consists of grooves cut helically on its circumference from one end to the
other and vice versa. These grooves enable the yarn to be traversed. Thus the movement of
the drum is described as ‘rotary’ traverse.

The Winding Drum system is powered by electricity and it essentially works by winding the
ropes or unwinding the ropes connected to the sling to bring the elevator to the desired level.
The system is typically located at the top of the home elevator (you can install at the bottom
of the unit but it makes it really hard to service). When the call is registered, the winding
drum, winds up and the cords collected around which is connected to the elevator sling which
winds up the cords and brings up the elevator.

Advantage

 Do not require a machine room. They still need space for a controller and two
electrical disconnects.

 Utilizes electrical power.

 Great for coastal properties as salt and sand will not affect the mechanism.

Disadvantage

 You will hear the click of the brakes every time the elevator stops at a level. It may be
annoying as the unit is typically located where the bedrooms are.
 Cables will require replacement depending on usage.
