Patience Care

The career of a medical assistant is a fast growing career in the United States today.

"Medical assisting is one of the nation's careers growing much faster than average for all

occupations, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics." (American Association

of Medical Assistants). A Medical Assistant is a trained professional that can take vitals, using

computer apps, greeting patients, updating and filling patient's medical records, and are trained

to do clinical duties. Also, “five things that you will start learning as soon as you start to work as

a medical assistant,” they learn to be patience, problem solve, work as a team, have

self-confidence and be able to grief after a patient's death. (Nurse Journal) Effective medical

assistants should be able to update medical records on computer systems, take vitals on

patients, and provide overall care to their patients.

Technology helps Medical Assistants in many ways. Having computer systems that can

record patients information is very important. Marisol Lopez, who is currently a Medical

Assistant at Mi Kids Pediatrics in Kentwood, Michigan, said “ Some of the people that I have

worked with joke around about when they used to have to use paper charts and document

everything by hand....and I honestly can't imagine!” Without this technological assistance,

things would have to be handwritten, and this would take much more time and resources. Today,

technology has advanced information systems and can be typed on documents, and files will be

automatically be saved. Technology is such a useful thing to have because it helps medical

assistant find information on every patient medical records easier and it is an easier way to

communicate instead of having to mail papers. Technology has advanced over time, and today,

there are sensor technology that don’t need any contact with skin to work, and it gets vitals at

once. Instead of having to read the meter to see the circulation of the blood pressure there are

now computer screen that will give medical assistants a number of measurements. “Their

technique relies on small radio frequency identification sensors, the same technology that’s in

key fobs, that can pick up heartbeats, chest movements and even blood pressures, and can keep

track of multiple patients at once.” (Nathaniel Scharping) These modern technologies have

helped many of the medicals because it makes everything go smooth and it takes less time to get

vitals done.

Taking vital signs for every patient is important because getting accurate information on

patients is necessary to help see that everything is circulating well, and to see if everything is

okay. Also, it helps the Medical Assistant know if there is any problem with the patient. “It is

important to take vitals because it is a big part of what you do as an Medical assistant.” (Lopez).

Every time a patient comes in for an appointment or an emergency a Medical Assistant’s job is

to check the blood pressure, temperature, height, weight, etc. “When patients arrive for a medical

appointment, it’s the medical assistant who has prepared the treatment room and made sure

equipment is ready for the doctor.” ( Your Free Career Test). Medical Assistants do all the basic

job and get the information for the Doctors so when the doctor comes in and check the result,

they can see if everything is good or not and they will have information ready that can help them

find how patients health is. Taking patients vital helps find information on how the patient’s
Miguel-Garcia 4

current heath is. Also, “vital statistics that may be of use to identify a predisposition to a disease

or disorder and that assist with proper dosing of medication include weight and height. (Meridian

College). Vitals are really important because when patients come in for Physical check-ups

medical assistant’s want to see how the patient is doing with maintaining their health. When MA

put the results of all the vitals into the computer there is a chart that will calculate the percentage

of the patients health and whether it is good or bad. “Vital signs give you a baseline when a

patient is healthy to compare to the patient’s condition when they aren’t healthy.” (Meridian

College.)

Providing overall care to patients makes a medical assistant efficient at their job because

they will provide many different procedures to gain pertinent information for the Doctors. When

medical assistant gather information, they will hand a doctor the records and the doctor will look

for a treatment or a prescription for medication then the medical assistant will hand the patient

documents and prescriptions. Medical assistant provides care to their patients because they inject

and vaccinate their patients. Also, they provide review prescriptions for the patient’s health.

Vaccination is important because their medicines help prevent disease and sickness from spread

around. The medicine that is prescribed to patient’s is directly to cure the sickness or pain that

the patient has. “They also instruct patients about general care, medicinal procedures and special

diets.” (Rasmussen College Brianna Flavin) The most important thing that a medical assistant

will do is to help the patient on why it is important to be healthy and how to actually stay

healthy.

Overall, Medical Assistant jobs make them efficient because of the clinical duties they do

are important in health. The job of a medical assistant is important in clinical because they will

greet and be in charge of the patient throughout the visit. They run the patients visit smooth and

gather information for it to be ready for the doctor. They update all medical records on every

patient, take vitals on their patient, and provide overall care to their patients.
