Ghita privi din nou la Pintea si, vazand mania ce se
oglindea in ochii lui mari si in sprancenele-i incretite,
isi ridica capul si isi potrivi hainele pe trup, in vreme
ce vinele de la tample din ce in ce i se umflara.
- Domnule comisar, zise el asezat, nu te
incrunta la mine, ca n-ai pentru ce. Asa este,
am primit semnele turmelor lui Lica, pentru ca
sa-i pot spune daca trec porcii furati din
turmele lui pe la carciuma, ba cand mi-a dat
porci , pe care puteam sa-i banuiesc, n-am
venit aici sa va spun d-voastra.
- Dar sa nu-mi arunci mie vorba asta, urma el
luandu-si avant, caci, daca-i asa, eu trebuie sa
vi-o arunc d-voastre! Daca nu stiti sa curatiti
drumurile de oameni rai, cum il credeti pe
Lica, atunci ramaneti cel putin drepti si nu-i
napastuiti pe aceia pe care tot d-voastre ii
lasati in stramtoare!
Ii parea rau lui Ghita ca graieste aceste cuvinte si
chiar atunci cand le rostea, se mustra pentru ele, caci
stia ca-l vor umplea pe comisar de manie; insa el nu
se putea stapani, trebuia sa deie odata pe fata
gandurile pe care le purtase atata vreme in inima sa,
trebuia mai ales acum, cand era de fata si Pintea, pe
care nu voia sa-l mai lase in nedumirire.
GHITA looked at Pintea again, and seeing the fury
mirroring in his eyes and in his curled eyebrows,
he raised his head and settled his clothes properly
while the veins from the sample were growing
inflamed.
“Commissioner”, he said calmly, “stop frowning at
me, you have no reason. Indeed, I’ve received the
signs of Lica’s herds, just for to say if I should have
led the stolen pigs from his herds over the pub,
and when he had given me some pigs, and I knew
there was something wrong about it and I didn’t
come here to tell / reveal you”.
“And don’t you dare to speak to me like that”, he
continued dashingly, “if so, I’ll have to do the

bad people cleaned, as you believe about Lica, at
least remain honourable, and don’t plague those

Ghita regretted about the words he was saying,
and even the moment he was speaking, he rebuke
himself for what he had been telling them for he
knew they would get him very angry. He couldn’t
stop though, he needed to outspoken his thoughts
he was carrying in his heart for so long, and he had
to do it now more than ever, when Pintea was
there too, whom he didn’t want to let him in
unclear.

sa deie in Ghita; insa el simtea ca de aici inainte il tine

joaca cu soarecele.

Pintea continued to be unclear though, for he
hadn’t found out everything he should. Besides,
this little he only now found out about them, by
chance, when Ghita had been forced by
circumstances, not before, while they had been
alone.
As for the commissary, his face blushed as red as a
crab and there was a moment he could have lifted
his hand and strike Ghita; instead he felt that from
now on he had Ghita hold tight / closely and he
could play with him as the cat does with a mouse
in his hand as in a ct and a mouse game.

The early autumn day was warm and charming, and

woman, who had pink ribbons in her cap, perched
up with a mirror behind her back and smiling at
someone placed out of sight. This, to be exact, I
noted afterwards; what I first observed was a lady
seated alone, outside, at one of the little marble
topped tables.
My brother-in-law had stopped to look at her.

erau deschise, o jumatate de zizna de plante erau
aranjate in recipient, langa usa. Trotuarul era
presarat cu tarate RUMEGUS.
Era o cafenea, draga mie, INTIMA veche, micuta;
inauntru, in lumina semiobscura DIFUZA am zarit o
doamna voinica TRUPESA , frmoasa , care avea
panglici roz in cap, asezata pe un postament. In
spatele ei era o oglinda iar ea zambea la cineva din
zare. Ca sa fiu mai précis, aceasta am observant-o
mai tarziu. Intai de toate am sesizat-o pe femeie
stand singura, la una din mesele marmorate de
afara.
Something had been put before her, and she only
leaned back, motionless and with her hands folded,

Cumnatul meu s-a oprit sa o priveasca.
Cineva asezase ceva in fata ei si ea doar se lasase pe
privind in departare, spre strada. Am vazut-o, dar nu
foarte bine. Totusi eram sigur c o stiam de undeva,
